Our new conservatory

We have updated our conservatory with a new glass roof. It is completely sealed and very warm. We also have a radiator in there. My question is do we still need to have doors separating it from the kitchen? We use it for dining in as well as relaxing in during the day. I see loads of pictures with no separating doors , but not sure if it is ok or not.

You need to comply with building regulations to remove the doors, however a lot of people do remove them, me being one of them!
We use ours as a dining area too and it flows through from the kitchen. I'm prepared for the issue to come up if/when we sell and we would offer to have the doors put back on, but I doubt the buyer would want this anyway. I know some people have found it cold in the winter, we haven't had a winter yet but do have underfloor heating.

We have French doors on ours separating it from the dining room (soon to be kitchen/diner once we've knocked the wall down in a couple of weeks). We keep the French doors open all year round except when it is really hot in summer as the doors stop the heat escaping into the rest of the house. We had the conservatory roof insulated a few years ago & it's made a huge difference...cooler in summer & nice & warm in winter

We have a glass roofed conservatory, which is across the back of our house, completely open plan. We just leave the doors and windows open. We eat in there every night as we use it as the dining area, so we have thick curtains, which we pull a few of across to block the sun whilst eating. They also serve to keep out the cold in the winter.

If you were our client, we would first assess which way the house faces in order to understand the direction of the sun and the likely impact on the space in terms of light and heat, plus we would ask what use you intend to place on the new space. It is also the case that with whatever heating - a fully glazed conservatory can seem an inhospitable space in the winter months. Even in the UK heat gain during our short summer is a major consideration and whilst roof blinds can be added - these can spoil the original design intent. A part solid / part glazed roof with fully glazed walls may be the most successful. Attached image of a garden room with a large strategically placed roof light and two fully glazed walls.

Good shout - BUT if I was going to spend any money on that complete waste of space I would brick-up some of the windows, put some sort of hipped-roof on it, insulate it, and turn it into an actual usable space. It will now stay as it is for the foreseeable future and the doors will remain permanently shut with it not being used again for 7 months (April/May'ish) time for a couple of days before its gets too hot. This is the single thing I hate most about our house, it's frustrating as it's such a dead space. I even hate it more than the bidet in one of the bathrooms which wastes space and is pointless (apart from my 4 year old using it once to wash her hands as she thought that it was a childs sink)

Hi Gina. We have had the new conservatory roof fitted (not complete yet, missing 3 sealed units which have been filled with plywood for now - Anglian Windows are severely testing our patience. 3 day job now running into week two). Plasterer came on Sunday to plaster pelmets and make good other wall areas exposed by change of roof style. Lots of snagging issues. But on a positive note we have tested some areas with F&B string and really love it. Will need to cover the old orange colour to get the proper effect. Do you think that the pelmets should be the same colour as the walls?

Hi Carol, emmauk is spot on. If you plan on removing the existing french doors, you will need building regulations. A lot of people tend to take the french door sash off the frame, and leave the frame in place. In the very unlikely occasion that you have a building inspector turn up, you can always replace the sash's back onto the frame.
