While white fencing isn't for me in a back garden, I have seen loads of pics here on Houzz with white fences and, although they mostly seem to be over in the USA (let's face it - they tend to have better daylight in parts of North America than we do in the UK) I do like the look of it, though. I especially like the whitewash appearance if you're going for a Cottage Garden as it adds a weathered appeal. I went for black in my garden which looks pretty stylish, especially with the greens and whites in front of it. I used to live in a house with a roof terrace and we were advised at the time to not use white on the inside of the parapet walls as it would glare too much. The chosen option for the wall was pale grey (before it was fashionable) and it worked really well. For this reason, I wouldn't have gone for white fence or white furniture.

7m x7m precludes palms really and don't forget Date Palms and Washingtonia are both affected by the Palm weevil and will need regular treatment. If you don't live there full time and are unable to get regular maintenance carried out, go for indigenous succulents and things like grape vine ( I have 5 huge vines at my house on the mainland, they make beautiful shade in the Summer, produce kilos of grapes and the only care they get at the moment is a trim in the winter and a thorough watering in the Spring as I am only there twice a year until I retire there next year). I like the look of Bougainvillia but it can tend to overgrow a small space and is unpleasant to trim back with its spiteful thorns, Wisteria is a better bet for a climber but takes a while to establish and produce flowers. Lantana, Plumbago and geraniums are all indigenous and do quite well without too much care, there are also some dwarf bamboos that do well in hot dry conditions, common Ivy does well here but is invasive. I know that there are a few good garden centres around the outskirts of Palma so go and have a look around,many of the labels give you good information about habitat and growing conditions and I am sure the staff would be only too happy to give advice. I have lived on Ibiza for the last 13 years, it is a little more humid than some parts of Mallorca but if your place is to the West of the island closer to the mountains that will also be fairly humid, there are plants there that have evolved to survive on the moisture from the nightly dew. There are also a lot of ornamental grasses that will grow with a little irrigation, some of them change to fantastic reds and browns toward the end of the Summer and produce beautiful seed heads, a range of Ryes, Timothys and fescues would give a layered effect. A late thought, looking at your photo, if you have trickle irrigation you can install some of the pockets for a vertical garden on one or more walls of the yard to produce a lush, cosy atmosphere. Painting the walls a slight off white will help you to achieve a clean canvas without having plain white walls. After you have samples of the flooring try to match up your paint for the walls by going a few shades lighter. You can then add in colour by adding artwork on the walls and perhaps a rug on the floor to add warmth.

Was also going to say that is an impressive list. Much more than I can get hold of 🙂 and I agree that it depends on how much sun or shade the border gets. Which direction does the back of the house face? Had a good look through the list and a lot are seasonal bedding plants such as the lobelia, petunia, marigolds and so on which can still be useful to fill areas whilst the perennials settle in. I’ve compiled a shortlist of what I think could work well assuming it gets a fair amount of sun but even then in my experience choosing plants can be hit and miss. Some may take well while others may not. Primula and polyanthus might prefer a shadier position but it’s my experience that they’ll grow anywhere. Osteopermum, nice plant but better if you’re down south, mine died off in a sharp frost. Peony (slow growing). Risky but a nice plant if it takes well. Platycodon (Bellflowers or campanula), some can grow very tall but some are alpine variety so choose wisely. Lithodora, Cistus (silver pink), Aubretia, Lewisia, Saxifraga, Armeria Thrift, Arenaria, Arabis, Senetti are all rock/alpine plants I think and should do well in that border and won’t grow to high. They‘re quite often used in basket and container arrangements. The Cistus (or rock rose) is one of my favourite plants. Two others that struck my interest are Deutzia Rosea which looks like it stays compact and Andromeda. I’m assuming it’s Andromeda polifolia ‘compacta’ (bog rosemary). Looks lovely and one for my own list. 😊 If you want some taller shrubs/ plants do a little more research as there some good options there. Hope this helps. x
