Kitchen help - what can we do to make it look better?
Comments (65)Depending on how far you budget goes, I would look at adding traditional cornice and pelmet and replacing the plinth with a similar oyster colour. End panels for wall units could also be replaced / added. Some chessboard style tilling in 3 colours would also bring out the walls. It's hard to tell but is the oak surround also on the wall units? I haven't checked your location but this is something we can help with...See MoreHow can we give this pantry a make over
Comments (7)It has all the woodwork around it for a door, but the door is missing, which doesn't help with the odd look. It's ok to turn it into a shelf only area, but you really need to remove the woodwork, which is making it look like a cupboard missing a door. Alternatively, if you don't want the hassle of roughing up the plaster & having to repair it when you remove the architrave, then put a door back on it. Traditionally Pantry's are a little larger and are for storing tins and jars of food. Are you going to use it for that? Do you want that on show? You could have shelves with baskets / boxes to keep everything hidden and tidy. Another idea would be to take a portion of the left hand wall down, open up the space as per picture 3 below and make it a larger open Pantry / Shelf design. Decision is yours alone x...See MorePlease help me make myself look ‘warm’ again!
Comments (11)Post as many photos as you can, it will really help. Colour temperature is not something that we can measure, it is a 'feel' thing so we are all affected by it in different ways. I know I am really affected by it and so could never paint a room with pale blue/grey walls unless it was south facing and made of glass. Interestingly, the trend for grey was really pushed in the industry by the same people who are now pushing warm peachy beige interiors. It's fashion, pure and simple. Another factor is that LED lights (most of which are too yellow or too blue) make cream paint look sickly whereas the old Halogen dichroic lights were very flattering. Many true grey paints are actually blue which can look cold, pure white almost certainly looks and feels cold in rooms starved of natural light. In general there are creamy yellow based neutrals, green/yellow neutrals, cooler green or blue neutrals and taupe neutrals which are usually a bit red or red violet. Avoid anything too yellow with a grey that looks very blue, they will exaggerate each other. Skimming Stone is a good colour as it has a bit of magenta in but can appear warm enough to look pleasing but isn't creamy. I also have grey tiles in my kitchen and dining room where I have painted the walls Joanna by Little Greene which is a very pale taupe. If a room feels flat then a shot of saturated warm colour such as a deep olive can really cut through the grey and warm it up. Another thing to consider is painting the skirting boards the same colour as the wall, it can then just look like a white room that is easy on the eye. This is 'Joanna' in my dining room. Another thing that can help is add as much nutty brown as possible. Brown can be a dirty orange, yellow orange, red and even purple/reds. People say every room needs black, I say every room needs brown. Hope this helps....See MoreHow can we make the porch look modern, please help!
Comments (23)hi Neverforever, I think you really need to repair the entire side of the house- looking at the photos you provided, the entire side of the house look as though you have a number of spalled bricks, which have suffered from frost damage. whatever you decide as a finish , you should address these in the final decision to protect your home. I think that the amount of space lost at the side cladding the house in timber , would not lose a lot of space in the driveway. you have pipes at the side protruding at low level. Can you advise on the width of the space between the two houses. you own half of this width and have a right of way over the neighbouring house for driving your car, so this shouldn't really cause issues with the neighbour. A timber clad would provide a modern update to the look of the porch, whilst the render and paint would be a simpler update. you might want to look at external insulation and a render finish to the entire house. This is something the government is looking to push for improving the energy use of the housing stock in the uk. best Rowland...See More- eve thanked Landscape Design by James Brunton-Smith Limited
