What type of treatment has been used on the beams? It looks invisible or did it change the orriginal colour?

Hi Benjaminnel,

We didn't treat the beams at all, we left everything in its original state and all repairs were done in situ with a covered scaffold structure. The beams dried out over the summer and we used lots of hidden steel blades to strengthen those that had suffered the most. No woodworm treatment or cleaner was used- just a soft brush and that was it.

I chose other because I think it depends on the building. Both photos above (and Victoria Harrison's with her post) are gorgeous and building appropriate - is there anything worse than exposed beams in the wrong setting? Maybe painted ones in the wrong setting, lol! Either way, in the wrong setting exposed or painted beams send the wrong message.

I would box in the pipework as that is going to be very difficult to paper around. I would also get yourself a proper scalpel from an art shop as these are best for cutting paper in situ - it will also be easier if you have paper where you can paste the wall rather than the paper. One issue you will have is around the edge of the fireplace as its such an irregular shape you will really struggle to get a clean edge. I would be inclined to agree with others who have said you will get a better finish if painted - if the wall was painted I would also polish the copper pipes to a high sheen if you don't plan to box them in, its an easy job and looks great when done.

Your ceiling height and if any of its a pitched roof might make it difficult/impossible for a lowered ceiling, but assuming that you have the headroom then your builder may well be happy to quote for the additional works now rather than later, the extra costs incurred may be a factor in your decision making.

Thanks so much for the helpful replies! It is wooden (hollow) and is and it looks the same in the room it leads to (visible on both sides). When I bought the house it was covered in a yellow gloss paint which I started removing, but i need to finish it – hence the odd mix of colours on it at the moment! I haven't reduced the size of the doorway (not to say it hasn't been reduced in the past) but I agree perhaps there were double doors there at one point. Excuse the bad photo, I just found this on my phone from a few days back mid-plaster. I had all the walls downstairs skimmed as they were covered with a textured plaster/artex type thing (both walls and ceiling!) Interesting re: the skylight and frieze, I hadn't thought of that! I guess I could just leave it as an unusual feature.

Nope, no treatment and no evidence of active woodworm. Obviously there was some historically. We consulted a specialist who said that it was unlikely we'd need do to any chemical treatment, but to keep an eye on it. We've lived in the barn for over 12 months and there is none. Apparently they only like colder damp environments, so now it's a sitting room with heating and a wood burner they're unlikely to survive. Rob

I guess if it was in softwood that might be different, but the Oak is over 700 years old and so solid you'd need a chainsaw to cut once into the deeper parts of the beams. Rob

Thank you for your reply. We have a constant battle with wood worm although our old farm house is not oak. I did have some oak beams come in out of an old local barn but they were also riddled with wood worm. Lovely house your very lucky. Sue
