Hi. I like the colour it is, it's a lovely room. I think gold would be too much personally. If it needs painting i'd go for a chalky white. I would pick up more of the black accents. Add maybe 3 black framed pieces of colourful modern art ( picking up greens and blues as well as red and yellow) over the sofa (similar to what you have over the fire). In terms of a rug would you consider a cowhide Which they also do in white and gold. I only say as they're easy to just plonk on a floor rather than arrange with seating given the size of your sofa. Have you tried moving the sofa down towards the fire with maybe the gold chair in the left corner by the trifolds ( not right in the corner though) so it incorporates all of the sideboard into the room? Add a floor lamp in the other corner of the doors, maybe a tripod with a charcoal or black shade. I'd clear all the books on the cabinet under the shelf. Maybe add a colourful table lamp with a plant and another accessory. Try rearranging the books so you have piles as well as upright which may (hopefully!) give you some more space, you could also pop a little print or vase off centre. Perhaps a mid century style table?

I agree with much of the above. The colours are already quite hot so I would cool the whole scheme with pale warm grey walls. If you pick out the outer end walls in a punchy darker grey it will 'correct' the long narrow dimensions of the room. I would cluster most of your artwork above the sofa on the large wall and hang something earthy like a wicker basket above the log burner. A neutral gabbeh on the floor (try ebay) would look good.

Your room is working so well already. Personally I wouldn't paint it but invest in a super size canvas of modern art the length of the sofa to brighten the room and bring it together. I would also move the family portraits to the bedroom (sorry, this is just a personal thing) and have a coleection of vintage coloured glass vases (as it looks as if you have started) and I would box in the books and keep the cbinet top underneath clear. Your furniture is streamline so I think your room needs to be the same. If you really can't bear not having a warmer feel so it's less stark contemporary but moe modern contemporary I would place a coloured roman blind over the patio doors and a matching over the window (you can still keep the blind, make this one for show only, so not operable, as it will be cheaper and the blinds will screen out the light.) This is a fabulous room!
