Which course do I take to study Interior Design?

I'm hoping there's a pro out there who might be kind enough to give me some good advice on what course I should take to work as an Interior Design. I have a degree in English and 15 years experience as a Media Producer, but I'm now looking for a change of career - into interior design. I just don't know which (pref Online) course I should take. I see that KLC comes highly recommended? I have seen many courses - diploma / degree, but which one will open doors for me? Thank you.

College's do part time/ full time courses, I did HNC in interior architecture and then I swapped to architectural technology as I preferred the technical side more, but my classmates continued to HND and last month went on to 3rd year at uni studying interior design and love it. I agree that distance learning won't be very good, at college/uni you receive guidance from people who have studied architecture/ fine art/ graphic design/ 3D computer design/ live clients from the industry/ , not forgetting what you learn from classmates and feedback on your designs. It's a tough course that was a real eye opener for me as I really did think I was going to be matching curtains or something but it's defo much more than that and has made me in awe of interior designers and the the work that they put in.

Hi Reesietee.. I know everyone's different, but I'm not sure that you could take an Interior Design course "on-line" and achieve the level of insight that a Designer needs to be able to "create" for others.

If you are interested in design, you're already on your way to becoming a designer, but I think you really need that "hands on" experience by taking classes, as you'll get the feel for shapes, paint techniques and spacial awareness and in a classroom of like minded people, you get to "interact" with your classmates in a way that you might, when you get clients.

I studied City and Guilds Design and Crafting over 4 years within my local Adults Education system and I enjoyed every minute of it.. It's an experience well worth pursuing.

I loom at Turkish design. There is a brilliant house that is 150 years old opposite our apartment that our friends used to own. On the outside its about 3 stories tall with a roof terrace with a pool. Inside it has a balcony in the middle of it so when you are on the terrace you can look down to the ground floor. It is super-modern inside and he could control practically his whole house my his iphone - from air con to lights! Whenever I am refurbishing my house i always think back to his house.

interior design is about designing layouts and flow of a room or area. It looks at principles such as your daily routine in a room, how much time you spend there, making things easily accessible and in a logical place, looking at lighting, and ultimately creating the most usable space in a given area. Interior decoration is about dressing an area and making it look good, this is where colour, texture and accessorising comes in. An interior decorator will recommend cushions, an interior designer won't (in the technical sense anyway). Interior design can be very broad ranging from houses to airport terminals. Many interior decorators offer interior design too, but in the academic and qualification sense, if you were to do a course for example at KLC, they are treated as two very different disciplines.

Try BCID :) you can work at your own pace and have a lot of flexibility in terms of what areas of interior design you want to focus on. Agree with Oneplan- I don't do it as a job but it's definitely worth being clued up on the subject

As a graduate of KLC many years ago, I can highly recommend their courses.
What type of course would also depend on what area you would like to work in afterwards as different sectors typically require different qualifications.

Do bear in mind that it's a highly competitive industry with not enough positions to accommodate all of the graduates so my advice would be to undertake the most comprehensive and widely recognised course you can in terms of time commitment and funds (which doesn't mean you have to attend a private college, such as KLC, many state-run colleges also run are excellent courses such as Chelsea School of Art and Design and Brighton).

I studied under The Regent Academy and received a City and Guilds certificate and two Interior Design diplomas - this entitled me to have letters after my name. You study from home as they are correspondence courses which was ideal for me as it meant I could carry on caring for my disabled family members yet still achieve qualifications in something I love - I also studied floral design and photography with them as well and would highly recommend them their site is www.regentacademy.com Hope this helps :-)

I finished my FDA with klc and looking for a less intense course time wise to do my BA top-up. Had anyone had experience with nda? Any review on their support and running of the course?
