Dressing Ideas for Dormer Windows

We've just completed our loft conversion and the decorators will soon be in. We're turning our attention to the coverings for the dormer windows.

We like the idea of shutters but are concerned as they wouldn't be able to fold flat out to the walls (presumably) and we want to the windows clear during the day, just covered at night. Could we fit bifold shutters in? Do they go flat to the walls?

We expect to build some drawers with cushions for seating on the top below the windows.

Any great design ideas for the windows? We are generally going for a modern look up there. Floor will be grey carpet, bathroom driftwood. Conversion is being used as a bedroom and dressing area with an en-suite.

Hi Scott,

Sorry it's been a little while since you posted this. Hopefully I can offer a little advice.

You're right, shutters won't fold flat in your space. Of course, if you're set on shutters, you could still have them. If you chose wide louvres (to let lots of light in) and opted for a hidden tilt rail for a clean, uncluttered feel, you could simply tilt the louvres to let the light in in the day.

However, as you say you'd want them open in the day, bi-fold shutters may still be an option. It does however look like you still wouldn't have room for these to open fully, but instead the shutters may open and get stuck. If you went for shutters in the recess and had them open to a 90 degree angle, this could be an option though.

Alternatively, if these sound like compromises you're not willing to make, why not try Wooden blinds with tape? They have a continental feel that many people feel mimics shutters, and are of course a cheaper alternative. You could also opt for a faux Wood for the bathroom, along with tape, to keep the look both coordinated and practical.

Hi Scott, forget shutters here, a simple Roman blind is all that is needed for this type of window.

Would you consider Plantation Shutters? They can be made to measure, are great for privacy and great to keep Heat from escaping! People commonly think they can darken a room, however if you opt for white, they are highly reflective when they are open- and stream light across the room. californiashutters.co.uk are very reasonable and show you how to measure and fit yourself. Hiya, Roman blinds which fit within the recess could be a nice option. These would sit a lot further in so wouldn't be a fire hazard. Alternatively, if you'd like a really neat solution, then Perfect Fit blinds clip into uPVC window frames without the need for drilling. They're available in Venetian, Pleated and Roller blinds so there's plenty of choice. Hope that helps a little, Zoe

Hi, It is a tricky one :( Do you want curtains? If so, a small track rail (like what is there at the moment) it probably best as it is slim and allow curtains to be out of the way of the door hinges when open. Otherwise, for a more minimalist look, you could get « clip on » blinds.
