How do we hide ugly lintels?

As part of our 60's house modernisation we will be replacing all existing windows, but are wondering how we can hide the white concrete lintels that sit above the windows? Is there any way to skim bricks and put them over the lintels? Anyone got any ideas please?

Hi Lisa

If you fix a brick slip to the lintel it will stand proud and you will need to consider how you prevent water ingress otherwise it probably wont be long before they pop off or spall.

You could remove the existing lintels and install something like the following:

but it looks like you have limited space on the first floor so you might need something bespoke and i suspect its going to be costly to do.

If you like the idea of a wood effect cladding you could use something like:

I would suggest that you do a large panel starting from your top lintel and then running all the way to the ground and make a real contemporary feature of this. Just doing the lintels will look a bit odd. There are loads of colours so you could do something really funky.

If you consider either of these options have a chat with a local builder or your window fitter about how you do this on a practical level.

Hi Lisa. What style of windows and colour are you going for? You can buy brick slips, basically a sliver of a real brick, which you may be able to match in. Presumably you can't afford to replace the lintels so maybe have a look at stone effect paints but it depends on what look you're going for

Thanks for your reply. I think we're going to fit white flush casement upvc windows, which do you think would work best?

Legally I don't think you are supposed to do anything to a neighbour's fence/boundary wall etc except erect your own fence to hide it. There is already a shed attached to this wall so I assume there's either a good relationship with the neighbours or they don't know and weren't asked; as Daisy said they poss can't see it. It doesn't hurt to ask out of courtesy, I'd only think there would be a problem if any drilling affected their internal plaster but if it's a garage that might not be an issue. I wouldn't put up with that view from a lovely new window seat feature when it's a quick and potentially dramatic improvement (i say whilst lying in bed with no attempt to tackle my eyesore of a garden!!) Oh the joys of technology. I have to agree it is a pain with it dominating the area. I have a chair in front of mine and it does hide it all, thank goodness. Is there room for a small corner unit to be made by a carpenter and fitted there?

Just as a rule of thumb, putting furniture next to a rad isn't a good idea. Regarding the radiator, usually trying to hide something just makes it more obvious, consider moving the table out a little, and painting the radiator, even design it if you feel like it. just remember to get radiator paint, its definitely cheaper than getting covers.

Hi Martha, I live in a similar age cottage - 1909 - and am in the process of replacing all the windows and doors with timber Georgian frames. They are replacing pvc windows with pvc crisscross internal strips that are supposed to mimick Georgian bars but just looked too artificial in a house this old. I’ve attached a couple of pics of the timber windows. It is expensive to use timber but in my opinion worth it. You can also get pvc Georgian bars that are on the outside of windows, instead of the pvc strips that are inserted in the window pane, so they would look more like the ones in the pics.

Both could look good, it really depends on the style of the window, are they contemporary or sash style etc? Is there a lip on the lintel or is that the top of the window? If using bricks, I'd obviously have them pointed upwards which may be a bit tight on the top window. If it were mine, I'd try the stone effect paint first as its cheap. You may also be able to get some form of wood cladding

You can 'skim' bricks by way of cutting them down with a disc cutter/angle grinder. You could take 10-15mm off the face of the brick, stick it onto the concrete lintel with suitable adhesive and then point up with mortar but the bricks will stand proud. Now that's OK if you have the equipment to hand and you feel confident to at least give it a go and if that being the case then it's be pretty cheap to do. If you rely on a tradesman doing it then there's no point as it's a lot of 'faffing' that will end up costing a fortune in labour. If I were to do it I might even take out 10-20mm of the lintel with an angle grinder and chisel and then fit the slips flush but you'd have to take care not to damage the lintel or take too much away. I think you might be safe with a third of the width, similar to the amount you can overhang a brick. Again, a fair amount of work, especially up a ladder!

If you get the window company to attach a fascia panel then it would be in-keeping with the new window materials and the current eaves materials. It should be cheap anyway. If, for example, you were replacing the windows with a grey aluminium contemporary window then they might need taking out, but you're going to put in white framed windows that aren't to dissimilar to what you have already so with that being the case I'd personally just save all the hassle and keep the lintels.

Out of interest - what have neighbouring properties done or do they all have the same concrete lintel?

Hi Lisa

You could consider external window trim. It would be like putting a door architrave around the window, but using a suitable external product. There are traditional 'moulded' examples as used on Georgian properties but you would probably want something simple and contemporary looking. Have a look at 'Canamould' for ideas. They are Canadian but the images would give some inspiration. Put in 'external window trim' in the Houzz product search and some ideas should be there. You will need to make sure the window cill projection is long enough. Your PVCu window supplier might be able to create a trim to go around the window but you would not want any fixings showing so it is all nice and neat. Hope the idea is some help!

Thanks to all for taking the time to write with advice. All the other houses around us are different so its only a problem for our house, but this has given us lots of options to think about so thank you :)
