Pendant light position

After some alterations we have a huge dining space of approx 30m2. I would like 2 pendant lights over the table however as its not going to be positioned in the middle of the room I'm finding it difficult to work out where to position them and provide enough ceiling lighting across the room Ie something else will be needed in the ceiling areas too. I'm wondering if it would be more flexible to go for semi flush fittings? The photo shows the shape of the area. Thanks for any advice!

Hi,

pendants lights must be above the table. You can use a different ceiling lamp type for the rest of the area. You'll get the feeling of 2 different areas in the living room.

Hi Shirley,

What a great space you have! We have had clients in the past with similar dilemmas, we usually suggest spotlights throughout the room with the decorative pieces over the table if thats where you want eyes to go to.

A tricky one to answer without a photograph but my immediate thought would be to leave the cupboard where it is, as by eye I would think that the alignment of the pendant lights would be harder to judge compared with the cupboard on a wall, in other words if you moved the cupboard off centre between the windows that would look more out of place. Could I ask your advice on tiles and paint. We have a traditional kitchen with oak tops and shaker grey kitchen doors (burford grey), but want to a add contemporary element too. I was thinking of metro tiles, a great suggestion someone gave me was white tiles with pale grey grout. I also would like to warm it up with an accent colour. I was going to use the cabbages and roses material for the blind (raspberry elephant stripe). What do you think or would you add / change anything ? I wish I had gone for a more simple dome pendant - might be able to change them still!

Hi Mrs Patel, Hope you’re well! I can see where your problem is regarding the positioning of the pendants, it’s frustrating when they are just off centre…. However, we think we may have an alternative for you. We’ve worked on a few projects in which we’ve used directional downlights to illuminate countertops, worktops and kitchen tables. Design dilemma - off centre pendant lights yes or no

One of my friends had a similar situation in his old house and normally the lighting being off centre would bug me just because I like the symmetry. However what he did was to position them so they were centred over his dining table instead which was in a similar position to where your green square is and it looked great. The fact they were in context with the furniture made the fact they weren't centred in the room a complete non-issue.

First, we love the lights from Curiousa and Curiousa (above), and have used them successfully over dining spaces several times. You have to be absolutely certain of your dining table position before fixing your lighting positions, same with the downlights. Make sure the latter are adjustable to give you some leeway. Another look is to have a single hanging light over the table but cross lit with direction downlight at the same time. Gives real sparkle.
