Pendant lighting over stairs

We have straight narrow stairs and fixings for three individual pendant lights over the stairs. Should we hang three pendants at different heights or have one main pendant in the middle? Does anyone else have this problem? If we hang three at different heights, the first pendant has to be hung so high to avoid anyone bashing their heads!

I would keep the three positions but maybe look for a different type of light. Something more flush to the ceiling. You could also have two matching pendants and make a first one a single spot or a different style. There is so much choice now it's overwhelming. Depending on your style I really like Industville for lights and their service is exceptional.

I’d have thought one light would look better? If the stairs are dark you could add downlights in the other 2 or use a table/wall lamp at the bottom of the stairs. Or a cluster pendant if you have the height

Hello Stella, Okay.. Well I would say that you could have pendants given the size of the room and if you're not having overhead extraction on the island for example... Also there are many other things you can do with an island that doesn't necessarily involve lighting at all.. You might want to hang your pans for example.. It's not a prerequisite to have lighting here. Interested to know what the Tropical garden window splashback is.. but don't forget a pendant can be a cluster configuration of a single drop. They look really gr8 at differing heights and 3 or 5 could be fantastic. In this way you can actually create something bespoke.. Things to consider are that beautiful bulbs that can be a feature in themselves... Scale... Large expansive, vs smaller. Then textures as this can create interest... Also colour... can you pick out the splashback somehow.. You can do this kind of thing with 1 ceiling rose and multiple outlets.. Have interesting cable and hooks... For other ways to illuminate which I can shed some light on... : ) ) no pun intended are wall lighting.. consider something more interesting than a spot or the usual suspects.. : ))

I think 2 or 3 would look more balanced than just having one. If you wanted to do 3 I'd step the 3rd one (over the counter) up so that it matches the step up from the level of the table. Somewhat like they've done below with the pendant over the sink. As far as spacing, this is what I found when I googled. Obviously just an idea, but always make sure it looks aesthetically correct (eg. get someone to hold it in place so you can see before you fit them) or it's likely to annoy you! "For functionality and adequate lighting, the spacing between pendant lights should be uniform. The exact distance between each light is based on the amount of available space, but a standard rule of thumb is to place lights 30 inches apart. Measure the distance between the bulbs rather than the edges of the fixtures." Love to see an update when it's all done - atb!

Wow Sarah that looks absolutely brilliant! Similar position as the lights in the link that Twyla sent look gorgeous but a bit over my budget (we're doing an extension and literally everything has come in over budget 😩) How lovely to make your own, I think I'm going to attempt it! Check the spec of the lights - it might be wise to avoid over the hob or at best use a rated lamp/light fitting that is capable of dealing with steam/vapour etc . Personally, I’d avoid putting anything over the hob.

Maybe one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom? I can’t really envisage what you mean. Perhaps a picture will help?
