Low ceiling - pendant lights over island

Hello, we're looking to put pendant lights over our island in our new kitchen. But with our ceiling only being 2.2m I'm thinking it may be too low to have them and the cable might look too short or the lights too big and getting in the way of sightlines etc? I love the round glass lights so was thinking two medium sized ones might work? I'm not keen on ones with a bar. Any advice most welcome!!

If length is an issue, have you considered making your own?!!! This isn’t the best photo - but is shows one of my hall lights. At the time, I couldn’t afford Jim Lawrence, so I bought the cable, ceiling rose and bulb holder online from Art Deco Emporium (loads of other companies do them too!) - cost less than £20. The glass shade is IKEA and I think around £15! It also meant we could have whatever height we wanted.

I think it would be fine, pendants look so nice over an island :)

You can get pendants with a very short cord...

I found pendants with adjustable cords for my kitchen which also has a low ceiling. I chose quite small pendants so that they looked in proportion

Hi, pendant lights will work as long as they are adjustable in height and not too bulky. We have a range of pendants that are adjustable in height and work well in kitchens with low ceiling. I've recently purchased another Firstlight rise and fall pendant in brushed nickel. This is to go with the metallic fittings in the kitchen ie sockets and cupboard handles. This is in addition to the original antique brass pendant in the adjacent dining area. They are an excellent centrepiece for the price but personally I don't think they would work in groups. Also available in white. Sorry I can't provide a picture.

It really depends on how high your ceilings are and the type of look you are going for. Will they make a statement or are they purely functional? I'd usually go for pendants with fixed shades because I'm usually committing to a style and I've chosen something I truly love. However, you can get some beautiful glass shades from places like made.com . Great that you both think it will be okay, and as you say I can look out for adjustable lengths so we can have it as short as needed.

Hello Jill, I am so glad you like it!

When you said glass round pendant I immediately thought of those ones. They are from Jim Lawrence. Even though quite pricey, I can say from buying them that they are good quality and very beautiful.

As @Anne Falconer says about small lights, Jim Lawrence ones are quite small, I think the one I posted a picture of is the Holborn glass pendant light, and is 20.00W x 23.80H x 20.00D (cm).

Thanks Twyla - it was really easy, and everyone comments on it too. I think the key is to get a nice ceiling rose instead of the normal cheap plastic ones. They’re also not that expensive either. I’ve since changed a couple of other ceiling roses and cables too - and it makes a huge difference. You can make cheap shades look fabulous!!

Wow Sarah that looks absolutely brilliant! Similar position as the lights in the link that Twyla sent look gorgeous but a bit over my budget (we're doing an extension and literally everything has come in over budget 😩)

I’ve got antique brass in my hall, a black Bakelite version in my living room and a white version in one of the bedrooms. They’re a friendly company and we’re really helpful - give them a call! You might need an extra shade ring so that you can sandwich the glass between. (They cost pence)

Jim Lawrence looks gorgeous - I am currently looking at these (although pricey!). Very good reviews too.

I think that the electrician should be able to adjust the cord (and chain if there is one) to suit: so length should be an issue on most lights? Check with the manufacturer.

I'm excited to attempt making my own lights, and yes I agree most cords are probably adjustable, but I just worried if it was quite short it would look a bit naff. But we can play about with it until we get the right length! thanks all very much for your replies, I'm eternally grateful!
