kitchen ceiling height 2.4m - ok to add pendants over island?

Hi All

I am in the process of opening up the kitchen diner. The ceiling area over the island is 2.4m, just wondering if this is enough height for a couple of pendants over the island or should I just stick with spots in the ceiling?

Pendants should still work, although you are right to be cautious. I would suggest avoiding pendants that are overly large - you can achieve a lot with more subtle/slim lights, like in the photo below. A budget buster would be to use the Marset Tam Tam 4 lights.

Thanks for the info, Would you mind sharing where you purchased the black slim lights 17VR. Oh goodness the Marset lights are lovely but way out of my budget.

Hello R countryside, One way to view the idea of differing heights re the ceiling is to approach this from an entirely different angle... Rather than consider the heights of the ceilings and worry about them. Instead focus on the decor height of the internal walls.. Ie where you paint or paper up to. Or consider floor and walls together to create a feeling of space. Another way to create a seamless and coherent look within the extension is to decorate with the same palette throughout... It doesn't have to be magnolia... It could be any colour either dramatic or more muted.. Consider too the possibility that you keep the palette the same from walls to ceiling.. Several visual examples for you to look at for inspiration too to compliment what I am suggesting here. One of my favourites is to colour block, and this can be another way to add a dramatic decor that you can taper off to the desired height and keep above to a single colour or not... :)) A period property but you can clearly see how the colour can swiftly dictate an eye level, and above picture rail height the cornice and ceiling is treated as one. Of course you don't need skirting, dado, picture rails to paint these. It is an old but a favoured decorating technique, that is surprisingly versatile... Here I would have painted the skirting either the same or a shade up or down depending on the flooring.. So you can dictate how the eye sees the rooms by deciding the heights (ie the wall decor) so to speak.. Here's the same principle but at dado height... (for some reason they're all dark which I love but they can be a palette you love.. Or be bold with a colour and do everything one colour with a shade darker on the ceiling.. This will reduce the height. The same could be applied to 1 colour in entirety. Then you add interest and texture with everything else! Furniture, lighting, placement, collections.. the possibilities are endless... 1 colour need not be boring. It then relies on texture the air of intrigue in your furnishings and lighting.. Also consider the heights of lighting.. Pendants or clustered lighting can be low and offer a dramatic statement over a table or a side table for example. Or a favourite reading chair.... Steer clear from ceiling acne ( my term for spot lighting) instead look to floor lights, wall lighting which can have an upwards illumination but of a more diffused and interesting appearance overall... For a softer glow.. Colour blocking is really fantastic you can be creative and still continue a theme throughout... The variations are really endless and can be considered on the flooring as well for wood floors... :))

Hi tani, the scaffolding one would be ok but will not give the sleeker square box section look your after, if it’s not too far, id take robin up on the offer to go on the welding course, you’d easily be able to put that together and cheaply as you’ll have access to their equipment, welding isn’t hard, getting it neat is the harder thing :-) I used to weld a long time back, never leaves you and very handy! As said, that’s not an expensive frame, esp if you can do it yourself, degreased raw metal and a coat if lacquer would be exactly what your after.

I'd like to add air extractors don't have a grease filter. It may increase smells (and everything that goes with stinky dirt) on the long run.. But most important: "An point to be checked is the required airflow for you extractor, normally this depends on the size of kitchen and also the type of cooking. The correct airflow for an extractor can be easily worked out, simply multiply the volume of the room by ten and you will obtain the ideal airflow for your kitchen. For example for a kitchen size of 4m x 4m with a height of 2.7m: (4 x 4 x 2.7) x 10 = 432. Therefore any product with the airflow of 432 m3/h will provide efficient ventilation."

Awww thanks Ellie, I was gutted for you to read about your flooring issues! Yea, the guys have really kept things moving forward. Downstairs Should be painted over the next week, then flooring goes down 18-20th..then they can fit the pocket doors into the frames, then they need to be painted! Then we can get all our furniture back! But next exam is the 3rd :-0 so Proper unpacking will be mostly after that! Need to order new wardrobes and a new bed! Can’t believe how much has happened! In the last few months! Back wall - plan is to get a wooden shelf (probably an upcycled scaffolding board one) for all my many recipe books, which will add some life and colour! And a magnetic strip for some knives :-)
