Living room colour scheme - please help!
Hi - we’re looking to redecorate our living room, which, other than slapping a bit of green paint on a couple of walls when we first moved in, we haven’t touched. My husband is keen to have a ”cosy, warm room”, which I think means he wants a room like his grandmother’s with a lot of ornaments, which isn’t really a style I like. Having taken some photos to post on here, I can see that the dark blue rugs really dominate the room, so I think they need changing, and despite it being a large room, it also looks quite cluttered (although it doesn’t feel like that). Only the sofas and armchairs need to stay. Oh, and the dog’s bed.
I’d be grateful if anyone can suggest how we can decorate to satisfy both of us, as I’m struggling! The back bifold door faces mostly east, so the late afternoon sun comes in through the front window. Thanks 😊

2 months agoDo you like the green wall colour? If you do then you could continue it round all the other walls to make it more cohesive, or choose a more sagey green. The blue rugs just don’t really fit in. I would get a much bigger rug, place the front feet of the sofas and chair on it. Go for something more neutral in a natural fabric.

Comments (4)I wouldn't worry about matching up the tiles if you're not keen on having red. I think the scheme will work as long as you stick to neutral, old-school colours, muted greens, blues etc. Just don't go for pastels - that would definitely not work....See MoreHelp please! Comments (4)It depends on what else you have in the room, the sofa colours etc. It looks to be a really nice room with some lovely features. Personally, I wouldn't paint it all a blue or a dark colour as East facing rooms can be gloomy on an afternoon. Have a look on instagram, there is a total shift away from dark interiors towards more neutral warmer ones. I like the idea of a nice bit of carpet and have it edged. We did that moons ago and worked so well until our springer Bonnie became old and incontinent, poor old girl. Have a look at F&B Cromarty, a lovely pale sage green that just goes with just about everything. I have it in my living room.

OK so a quick bit of furniture shifting, and while we still need to look at what art goes where, change the rugs, paint the walls, and we need a tall lamp by the smaller green chair, we have this configuration…

Yes, I agree about the chairs, but I’m working with the furniture I already have, so the small green chair will probably end up in a bedroom, and the larger armchair that matches the sofa will stay. Maybe with a small footstool (as I mostly sit with my feet up).
I also tried putting the sofas at right angles, and while there’s plenty of space length-wise, there’s not much width to play with, and my concern is that the left hand end of the sofa that would sit across the width of the lounge is too close to the hearth/fire. It also leaves quite a gap in the middle. I’ll shuffle the reading area forward and see how that looks - thanks!

you have some nice furniture pieces that can work well together and they are relatively natural, so they can pair well with a range of colours.
|It really depends on what mood, or feeling you are after. I would suggest finding some inspiration on Pinterest and checking colour palettes as well.
Just a few ideas, personally I really like the earthy natural tones of clay. Just makes me feel all cozy and warm and also very much of what is popular in interior design now.
I would do a whole room in one colour and very much stay away from feature walls as that is quite a dated look.
I would also very much recommend Large natural & neutral rug, The Rug needs to be large enough, MINIUMUM that the front legs of all the furniture are on the rug! also consider lighting, table and standing lights, as well as coffee and side tables.
I also saw that you are not sure in regards to the layout.
I think something like that could work well if you are not a very TV-focused family.

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions. We tried all sorts of configurations, but in the end we didn’t like any that split the room in two, but feel that moving the small bookcase to the other side of the room has really opened it up and made the two ends feel more cohesive (and we’ll find a different room in which to put the small green chair). We’ve also provisionally decided on using (a copy of) F&B Churlish Green paint (the large sample on the right) across all the walls. We just need to decide on the replacement rug(s) before we buy any paint 🤣🤣 and new cushion covers and some table lamps too.
