Me too, especially when you look at the second photo, which I think is in the back alcove of your kitchen, because that's where you really see the difference between the warmth of the cashmere vs. the cool harshness of the light grey. (By the way, I've been following your various threads but never commented before - I think your kitchen will be fabulous as you are making great, considered choices). I'm looking forward to the final outcome!

Hi Tani. Mmmm. Mixing colours by hand can be tricky in large quantities which is why I suggested taking a small sample of your existing paint first and and seeing how other colours change it. For sampling you can use any acrylic paint (acrylic has similar properties to emulsion) as you’re just trying to identify which colour you need for mixing, could be other tester pots, kids acrylic paints, artists acrylics etc. but when doing the final mix I would use the same brand and finish paint. In theory (and from memory) to make a dark navy blue lighter and warmer you’d need more of a dirty peach colour then add this to the navy at approx 1 part peach to 10 navy then add more if needed. All a matter of trying and testing. Having said all this it may be possible to sell the paint you have now (after all navy is popular atm) and get another colour.

I know it's counter-intuitive, but I'd go deep saturated Blue/green...or Teal. All over. It will unify all the odd planes and angles in this room. Keep all the woodwork a fresh white. Use pops of jewel toned soft furnishings...to link the blue & taupe sofas...or... Use patterns in tribal/ ikat tones to keep it masculine. Build up some open shelving for storage along dead-wallspace near the door entrance to this room.

I have to say that I don’t ‘get’ why people copy trends. I choose colours because I think they’ll look good to me, and suit the space, and I certainly don’t want to have to redecorate just because I find I can’t live with it. It’s taken me years with my present house’s north facing cloakroom, as I’d never had spaces with that particular north light, before, and I’ve lived in many different houses all over the world. Taking professional advice turned out to be wrong, as well, in that case. Fortunately, with the larger north facing and darker hall, I got it right, 15 years ago, and ever since it’s been a pale aqua, which looks both light, spacious, and oddly enough, being a cool colour, warm, rather than cold. It’s very easy on the eye, and acts almost as a neutral. But the other thing about following trends, is that you end up with the same thing as everybody else, and who wants that? Hm. Maybe some like to be part of a tribe? Perhaps that’s why magnolia paint used to be the go-to colour everywhere.
