Beware of hard and fast size/placement formulas! Declaring that the distance between the sofa and art should be 5" does not take into consideration the height of the piece. A very wide but short piece would not look good at this height. In fact, it would mostly be covered up by people sitting on the couch. It is safer to use a more flexible rule of the center of the art being at eye level. And the rule that end tables and lamps should come up to 58" - 64" would make them taller than **I** am *standing up*, much less sitting down! It is more important that things be done in a manner that suits physical needs as well as being pleasing to the eye, rather than adhering to a formula.

IMO, the lamps are too short.

Check in your local discount stores for something better for the room. By the time you buy new lamp shades, you could probably find one you like for not much more. If it is not in your budget for 2 just get 1 and get another later. They should not match anyway.

Yes, the 22" lamps are too short. What Mary said about 58"-64" is correct. So, my lamp tables are 24" tall and my living room lamp is 32" tall. It works but is still 2" too short according to the rule of thumb. Look for lamps in the 32-34" range. It really is worth taking a look at lampsplus and searching by price and height. They have lots of great choices.

When I started on Houzz several years ago, I spent a great deal of time browsing the wonderful Houzz pics. The very first thing I tackled in my home was replacing nearly every lamp with the proper size. After browsing those pics, I could see how very small so many of my lamps were. It's been an expensive process to replace so many lamps, but it was a huge improvement. I had so many lamps that were a ridiculously small size and in many cases, I bought new lamps as much as 10" taller. I think you're in the same situation with this room.

IMO 32-34 is too tall. When you are sitting next to table you do not want to see up under the shade. Yes, not everyone is the same, but hit an average. I would look at 29-32" max.

I love the evolution of this whole room.....you sound like you are having fun and are so open to so many great suggestions. My suggestion is that you need more black in the room so the black iron cocktail table has something to relate to.....pillows, lamps, lampshades, wool throw, basket for magazines, etc. But the room is really nice and so inviting. Love it!

Your end tables are the perfect height for the furniture.

Those are all pretty much the average. I would just test a few that are local that you can return. IMO 29-31 is good size, but seating could be different also.

Is there a HomeGoods near you? They usually have a nice selection and Susan is right--test local first!

Just go to a local shop that carries lamps. Take a couple home and try them. Even if you are not keeping them, you can test for size, then you can return as you have the correct size.

have you picked art for behind the sofa yet? i think you need to pull the brown from the sofa into the room more, to make it part to the space

tonight my husband is hanging the art I have been working on. The piece is 40" x 60". The sofa height is 41" . It is 25" away from the wall. Where exactly should the art be hung? it will be hung landscape style.

Normally, I would say the bottom of the art should be 46" from the floor to go with the 41" height of your sofa but your sofa is away from the wall, so I think you could go a tad lower. I'd place the bottom of the art about 44-46" from the floor, which will place the center of the art 64-66" from the floor.

That looks right, so maybe that's about 43" from the floor? That also puts the center of the art at a better, slightly lower spot.

I finally have the art painting hanging that I have been working on. there are still afew details to be added. but it is pretty well finished. I love the height that it is when standing in room. it is 42" from floor. But it doesn't look so nice when sitting in chair across from it. should it be raised afew inches?

I think that painting's size is fine for the bathroom.

I'd like to see a floor plan or additional pictures. This is not an appealing layout.

Try it and see. I'm not sure the red flowers will compliment your sofa. But try it for scale anyway.
