Rectangular Living room layout help

Can anyone please help me with the best layout for my new lounge. Its a big space with a window and french doors at either end. Then there is a fireplace in the center on one wall and door to enter the room on the other wall which a slightly off center. I want to make it one nice big family living room space and obviously need to incorporate a large flat screen TV. However I definitely don't want the TV above the fireplace. I'm just struggling to think of the best layout so as to include the fireplace and TV and make it flow nicely. I already have a large 3 seat sofa and have been offered the matching 2 seater sofa and arm chair by family. But I'm open to alternative sofa combinations if that would work better with the space.

TV to the right of the fireplace in the alcove, sofa on the wall opposite, armchair to the left of the sofa, near the fireplace but facing to the doors on the right. Then on the left hand side of the room you could have another small two seat sofa and some bookshelves to create a reading area? My lounge is a similar shape (although the entry door is to one end rather than centred)... Have a look at my layout.

Hi. Ignore my artistic skills and lack of scale but would this work? I'd use a rug to tie the seating area in with both feet on the rug. You can also add another sofa facing the french doors or if you get the same sofa have them back to back with the 2 seater, they look good with a console and lamps in between. I've attached a pic ( the first one I could save!) but Google images of back to back sofas

Dont feel overwhelmed take your time its just a matter of trying things and see how you feel in the space, Its difficult to feel the space from a photo so take what you like and see how you feel ! You are getting there, it would be good if the desk could go elsewhere ,but if it needs to be in the room then so be it, we work around it! the curtains are fine they really suit the window etc! You dont have to use the red in the picture, you can always pick up the grey, white or gold for cushions! wall sconces look beautiful and yes you do seem to go for the classic look which is lovely! but these days you can mix and match a bit! Your choices are great I am sure we will be able to help you make this space one you are happy with!

You could have a small table by the stairs then you'd block the cupboard. It's definitely not a small room but it looks a little tricky! I'd also go for a rectangular table by the window. I don't know how low the window is but I'd have a bench or banquette seat against the window wall if possible. Clear acrylic chairs i.e. Eames or ghost would be great on the other side to give a feeling of space. Zone the dining area with a piece of art against the wall and a light if possible. Sofa where MATH said. Depending on tv size it might be too high to go above the fire, if you put it to the left you may need to wall mount it and use a magic eye for sky etc otherwise you'd be blocking the stairs. For a coffee table I'd use either a slim glass or an upholstered footstool as they don't visually feel the space. You can add a little cabinet with lamp next to the sofa and zone the seating area with a rug. I'd also add a console where Jen said or a slim cabinet for storage. Do you have a pics of the room specifically fire and stairs to see if the tv would work there? I'd mark everything out on the floor buying buying anyway :)

You could only put your sofa in the middle facing the fireplace and it would need to move back in to the room a bit due to the chaise bit. Therefore, I think it might dominate the room too much., it's hard to tell without proper dimensions. It would depend on how much room you have to walk around either end. ?? I don't think it looks right on the other wall because it looks like it's facing the wrong way.

Hi there, Looking at your layout and depending on how many people will be seated I suggest looking into corner shaped sofa along the long wall closer to the window so that you can set up a TV on the opposite wall and get the most out of your space. However it does mean you may lose a little bit of the light from the doors. Alternatively you could have a 2 seater sofa and an armchair where your cupboards are to hide it a bit and still give you plenty of seating. For your dining table I suggest to keep this closer to the kitchen. From the floor plan I don't think you will be able to have a very large table so if you do plan to entertain I suggest to buy an extending dining table. I am not sure how far the kitchen comes, if it is beyond the door on the opposite wall? Then I would suggest to going for a two seater sofa instead. Hope this helps, thanks Rukmini

Thanks Minnie and Gary. That sketch is fine. You've both suggested TV in the same place and build round that area. And that's where I was thinking of putting it too.

The separate area behind the sofa adjacent to the fireplace looks inevitable, you've both suggested that. Which isn't a problem. I guess it's just too big of a room to try and make one space, everything would be too far apart. Just need to make sure I think carefully what that space will be used for so I don't waste it. Kids already have their own playroom so will be keeping it for the grownups!

We have the same area in ours.... We have a piano in that space.... But if we didnt we would make a reading/music area... Nice Eames chair, side table, couple of book cases, music system, floor standing anglepoise...
