Rectangular living room

Hi everyone, I have a rectangular shaped living room which I am finding difficult to design, the key feature is the big fireplace which I love so much and it's one of the reasons that attracted me to this house in the first place, I really want to be able to sit in front of the fire place as well as watch tv, few friends have said that is unrealistic that I have to give up one and to be honest I am quite happy to give up being in front of the television, I know I may need to add some bits to this living room but I don't want too much stuff I still want it to be free of clutter and feel like a home gallery. Would a coffee table work as addiction? Friends have also said to
get a big arm chair which I am not too keen on yet. Thanks for your help in advance. Bobby South west England

Often we find when we move into a new home the furnishings we had purchased for the previous don't work for the new. If you are wanting to make this a duo functioning room with TV and fireplace as a focus than you may have to rethink the blue sofa. You can keep a petite style to the furnishings, no oversized anything. My first thought is to push the TV into the corner with all the wiring. Then add a small scale sectional that is really just a long sofa with a chaise at the window side, and long so that it stretches in front of the fireplace. This allows you to have both views, one when TV is the motive and one when relaxing in front of the fire is. On the side of the fireplace closer to the dining set I would place a smaller "pull-up" chair that hugs the fireplace but is angled towards the sofa. You can add cubes or a small upholstered cocktail ottoman on the TV side of the sofa. Then add a narrow rug that ties the grouping together. Match the curtains on the patio door to the curtains on the window and add some fun art above the fireplace. Accents can always come after you have your arrangement planned. Have fun!

Thanks for the information, it's quite a challenge if everything you've listed has to stay in the room. I know it's costly but replacing your lounge and rocker with a corner lounge would work well. Alternatively put the rocker in a bedroom and work with your existing lounge. Position the lift chair in the tv corner, the tv, games console on the wall as you walk to the stairs and a corner lounge on the wall opposite the fireplace or under the window. Can you place furniture in front of those heaters? There would be space to walk thru to the stairs. I'll keep thinking of other options as I love a puzzle!

You could only put your sofa in the middle facing the fireplace and it would need to move back in to the room a bit due to the chaise bit. Therefore, I think it might dominate the room too much., it's hard to tell without proper dimensions. It would depend on how much room you have to walk around either end. ?? I don't think it looks right on the other wall because it looks like it's facing the wrong way.

If you have some left you could test it out in the living room too. It would be a nice continuation. Chic Shadow could work too, but to me it looks a bit dark and somehow when I look at Chic Shadow and Sapphire Salute together, I'm not feeling it. But it might be different in real life.

If you love the fabric, then that is your answer. Personally I think the window style is traditional and so I would go for a double or triple pencil pleat rather than eyelet. I presume you are having your curtains made bespoke in this fabric. Pencil pleats probably use a bit more fabric so would be more expensive, but bespoke curtains are already expensive and I think the finish with pencil pleats is superior. I always think full-length curtains look much better, but you do have radiators under your windows and full-length curtains would significantly block the heat during winter. Also when the curtains are open they may present as black-ish stripes on either side of the windows.

Try a TV lounge in the end that is wired for it, using the blue sofa and chair. Use a swivel glider opposite the FP with a small bookcase and a floor lamp, art hung above the bookcase and the FP. It will make a cozy reading nook. Keep it light and fun with bright colors that work with the blue pieces. Consider investing in a replacement for the pink carpet which is throwing everything off.

Thank you, the carpet is a shade of red not pink but I still HATE it but can only change it long term as I have only been living here just over a month

Crikey - nobody makes narrow houses like the English! I think you have to treat the area in front of the fireplace as a walk through and not try to incorporate seating. But you can still appreciate the FP from the two areas at each end. Make your fireplace something special by hanging a great piece of artwork or mirror above - and/or painting the upper chimney breast wall (three sides only) an accent colour. Then cover that red carpeting with rugs, rugs, rugs until you can afford to replace it! Push the television in the corner to the left of the window so it is less visible and place your sofa on the facing wall. This way you can watch television and see your fireplace. My lounge is rectangle like yours. However no Fireplace, but maybe an idea on layout for you?

Agree that you should make the area by the window for tv viewing. Move the blue seating there. Search for not-so-deep armchairs to place in front of your fireplace, at a slight angle, for a layout something like this:

Curious: Is it just for use as a Living room, or is there other things going on? like dining? reading? desk?

Hi Susanna it's a living room but I definitely want a small dinning area 2 or 4 chairs max which would also be used as a reading table and a small space for an exercise bike or yoga mat, this would only be temporary because am converting the garage into a home gym, thinking of a coffee table as well but can do without. please post any photos that you think would be helpful.
