Wood chip wallpaper

We are buying a house where, in what will be my son's bedroom, the walls are covered in hideous wood chip. Rather than spend endless hours trying to get this off the wall, is there a way of covering over it to improve the look of the room?

I think you'd need to remove it if I'm honest. We have recently removed it from the house we just bought. We scored the paper and then use a wall paper steamer and it came off without too much difficulty.

I'm sorry but I would have to say no. If you score the wood chip with a stanley knife in small harlequin type grid then get a large sponge and soak the walls in water it makes for a much easier job. Give the water time to soak in before attempting to scrape. Then to see what is underneath and no doubt a re-plaster….

If you go the lining route you need 1400 grade lining paper to cover the bumps but as the paper is thicker it may be tricky to work with

Hi there, you could get it plasterboarded over, reskimmed and then paint but it would cost more as getting someone to remove the woodchip may be something a handyman could do. Why not post the job on a "find a trade" website or local paper, I also see many people using Gumtree to offer their trade services.

If you can borrow a steamer it would make the removal a bit easier, especially if you score the surface. Definitely get the crack looked at too. I can't tell the colour of the carpet, is it terracotta? Whatever it it, search through Houzz photos to look for colour schemes that include that colour to get ideas for the complimentary neutral wall colour D& K Interiors above suggests, And don't forget to post pics when you have done so we can see the transformation! By the way, if you have a pensioner relative, they can get 10% off at B&Q on a Wednesday!

We would love to win this competition as we currently have leaking plumbing, wood chip wallpaper everywhere and a shower tray from the 70s! We a baby on the way and it would be nice to replace this with a bath as we don't currently have one due to the house being set up for an older lady with disabilities. Having had to spend our savings on the roof to ensure we were watertight from the top down, we are scrimping everything we can to make small changes to the house as we go. I'm also the breadwinner (and due on maternity next year) so we won't be able to afford anything for a long time with my husband retraining - bills are just about manageable! We love Houzz and to have something special like this would just top it off.

Seems to look like wall paper, i really can not tell ? you can also get damask patterned tiles , which i would recommend,with no spacers, Butted together, it will give you more of a grand finishing touch

Graham & Brown Wall Doctor range do a couple of woodchip cover wallpapers. Not much better than the woodchip itself in my view but have a look. I had woodchip everywhere in my house, even the ceilings. I got this: http://www.simplestrip.co.uk/ it made the job easier. Still a messy horrible job but worth it in the end.

In our experience, wood chip is no harder and sometimes easier to peel off than othe papers. Pull off the top layer in as big a bits as you can, hatch the under paper soak it twice one wall at a time and then scrape that off. ( The wetter the better! ) Lots of people make the mistake of trying to soak and strip the top layer, this is not correct, especially if the paper has been painted over. You'll only create a bigger mess, peel the top off first and soak the second!

From a professional opinion it has to be removed, a cheap steamer from B&Q would be a good investment and be so much easier than a sponge method (sponge or large brush alway most effective when only the backing paper remains).

You might also not need to replanted, I've lost count of the number of walls we have stripped and can count on one hand the number than needed plastering. If you want perfectly smooth walls however you will have to plaster as wood chip is only used to co we bad walls traditionally. Strip it, fill it and line it, my suggestion is use a heavy grade lining paper preferably WALLROCK- this will act as a kind of bandage for the wall.
