Very quick question

Please help! We are about to make a decision on the skirting, architraves, windowsills and internal doors for our new house. The overall feel of the house is modern country...quite contemporary, light and informal and with muted colour schemes throughout.

We are trying to decide between walnut doors and woodwork everywhere (our favourite timber - but dark) or oak (paler and hardier) or should we opt for walnut doors and paint the skirtings etc? Our window frames are painted timber, dark grey, inside and out.

Hi.
From the way you describe the property I feel that the walnut doors with white architrave and skirting boards would go well.
The white framing would highlight the doors and separate them from the muted colour schemes as well as giving a clean and vibrant feel to the rooms.
White window sills will highlight the grey windows as well as help to bounce the light into the room.
It would also tie in with the rest of the trims in white.
One of the main advantages to this is that you can be more bold and experiment with different wall colours and not worry to much about the colour of the flooring clashing with walls as it will be well separated by the white skirting boards.

Any kind of wood is great at creating warmth in a room but to much can be overpowering and look dated.

It would be good to see a pic but I think if you were able to slide a shelf over the top and down the length of the 6ft part then I would put some threaded bar stud fixings into the driftwood and groove out the shelves to sit on top so as they are out of sight when the shelf sits on them. Hope that makes sense.

I nearly always put glads in a pot. Just because I’ve nowhere else to put them. In fact most of my flowers are in a container of some sort and I group them together to make a display. Also have stored them in the shed over winter and just let them dry out and bring out in March and they come back but similar to tulips I don’t think they’re as good in the second year. I put a random mix of giant ones from B&Q in the garden soil and they did triumphantly well 2 years running, wonder if they’ll come up again this year.

As Jonathan indicated, you need to do something about the vibration. This is what’s causing the low frequencies (‘bass’). Is it sitting on a wooden floor? Have you contacted the manufacturer about it? It shouldn’t really produce a loud hum.

Quick fix for a dent in the wall

Scrape off the loose plaster, mix some polyfilla which you can buy from B&Q and put it on the affected area. Let it dry, sand it down and then paint over the area. You might find the the area you repaint will be a slightly different colour to the rest of the wall but let it dry out completely before deciding if you need to paint all of the wall depending in how long the original paint has been on.
