We have a ceiling mounted extractor in a very large room and it works really well. We ended up with a Brittania BEST extractor (bought from John Lewis) simply because we have a structural steel running above and the position of the internal ducting fit best with that model, though it's a bit bigger than we ideally wanted. The slightly lowered section of ceiling around the extractor is also because of the steel and wouldn't otherwise have been needed. We were actually told that there is a minimum height, rather than maximum, for it to work properly - see http://www.besthoods.co.uk/2011/08/ceiling-extractors-8-things-you-need-to-consider-before-buying-a-ceiling-hood/ It's very powerful and we've had no issues with it. A family member has the pop up option and that has been a bit of a hassle - it's not that powerful and ends up getting dirty from cooking every time.

Hi I was looking some help and guidance as my head is melted with all the decisions that come with building a house. I'm trying to create a timesless modern kitchen and I've decided to go ammonite cabinets and on my island I have a warm white grey quartz with a wooden breakfast bar. I dont know what colour to put on my walls. I have tried strong white farrow and ball which I like, cornforth white and purbeck stone which I think might be too dark. I have attached a few photos. The last one is the computer generated image. I have light colour tile on my floors too. I have tried railings on the wall that is featuring the ovens. (the ovens will also be cased in the same wood as on the island) but it seems too black. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tara x

Hi Sarah, thanks! I used Homebyme - an online designer (free! just Google the name) to put all of this together. There's a feature that allows you to render your 3d plans realistic like in my image. It's a bit fiddly but so worth the time :) you can also walk around your design in first person view. The space I have is 3m out from the structural beam above and 4m wide (+ pitched ceiling with 2 skylights). I allowed 600mm depth for the cupboards along the wall. To be honest, looking at your drawing I'm not sure that a long and narrow kitchen island is the best for your narrow kitchen, otherwise it would really need to be very skinny. I'm no expert though! How about incorporating a dining space like in this picture, with tall units one side of the wall and regular units the other side of the long wall, and with patio doors at the end? This would allow more light and views from the garden. Just an idea.
