Fireplace bricks - what to do?
I've not found many pictures similar.
Any / all advice appreciated.

Comments (8)I would paint the ugly red wood an antique white and the bricks a lovely soft grey, then get some cheap small black tiles in a sale and tile over the red hearth tiles or maybe leave them, see how they look. Comments (6)Many thanks for your suggestions. I will see if I can get a mantle to wrap around the current bricks. We may have to remove some of the bricks on the side to fit the mantle. I am not sure about having just a shelve above... I prefer to have the legs :) For the blue bricks, see below the inspiration I had. Comments (17)It’s a lovely room so I don’t think it needs much faffing about with. I wonder also about painting the chimney breast, and arches if you wish, in a green. F&B Pigeon or Mizzle are lovely, but I think Dulux Overtly Olive may sit better with your throw and cushions. Comments (4)So I haven't moved in yet but this is it currently. That whole fireplace is a freestanding suite, the chimney breast is bricked up. I'm tempted to have no fireplace at all, I'd prefer that to a faux thing tbh. I'm having a folding door put in on the the very right hand side so it opens through to the dining room, and was planning on a dark grey/green on this wall. Another option is to re-open the chimney breast and have something put in, even if it's decorative. But then I'm not sure what suits a 50s house - I'm drawn to black cast iron but I've always lived in Victorian properties... Oh, I'll be changing the lights too :-)...See More

Definitely leave them soot and all if you want it to look like a fireplace but you don't want to use it.. (I'd see if you can do) but some people don't want to or can't.
This doesn't mean you can't have the aesthetic... Buy a Swan basket freestanding rather than dogs.. that is big enough for the opening.. Then fill with logs.. You could have a slate hearth made to fit and then paint the chimney breast a contrasting colour so it stands out and then add a mirror. You can even add a mantle with two brackets and a large piece of wood as a very make do idea..
Here's a pic of mine as an example.. The original black and white surround was ripped out bashed up and thrown into the recess which I found (heartbreaking).. and in it's place it had a thirties thing put in...before I bought the place! So although it's a working fireplace (now) it doesn't have all of it's original features - I did though open it up and get it working again.. All I need now is a marble surround. or make that two as it's the same in the bedroom!. : ))
