Fireplace disaster; how to rectify?

Our newly installed 'piece de resistance' has turned into a (very large) disaster.
The limestone fireplace is huge - 180cm x 160 high and although modern-made, it's modelled on an old traditional style. We ordered the bricks from the same place but they have a darker hue to them. And then WE bought the fireplace cement but didn't release it was black (we thought it would lighten once dried). The builder who did the brick laying said we didn't have the depth to be able to lay the bricks thin side out like the base part.
So to conclude, we have a medieval looking fireplace with a 1960's brick work. Horrible! Any suggestions? We've thought about painting it but can only find black paint available (we live in UK, fireplace is in newly built house in Italy). How do we make the brickwork look as old and in line with the stone work? Would black fireplace paint work? The space is too large for a back plate to cover it all.
Would really appreciate any advice.
(Fireplace flue is not yet finished in photos.)
