I see your concern.

I would think out of the box and the first idea I have is to put a rug under the table one not too floppy to break all wooden effect and create a sort of eating corner.

Second idea I would try this kind of chairs

Sometimes it is good to go creazy

I think white is the way to go with this to keep everything fresh, especially since you already have a focal point with the walls and prints etc behind.

I like the idea of using benches rather than chairs since they visually and physically take up way less space making the area look bigger. The you could just have two eames style white chairs either end?

I would personally paint the seat backs or seat in the same colour. Try Frenchic furniture paint, fantastic for painting anything. Fab on leather and fabric.
