Just had new oak kitchen fitted, what colour floor tiles should I go for and what size to make it look bigger in my kitchen stroke dining room

Hi - if you search for oak kitchens in images on the internet, or here on Houzz, you should see plenty of examples of decorative schemes (including floors) some of which will appeal, and others than won't - this is a good place to start. Then, having got a general idea of what works for you, get some actual samples of the types of tile you like from your local supplier, take them to your kitchen / dining space, and look at the combination in different lighting conditions. I would also suggest that you paint up an A0 board (or large piece of paper) of the wall colour you have in mind so that you are judging the complete look.

Generally speaking, larger tiles will make the room feel spacious (60x60, say); if you have rectangular tiles (60 x 30 say) and run them across the width, this tends to make the space feel wider; run them along the length, then this makes it feel longer. Below is one image where taupe coloured 60x30 porcelain tiles were laid across the width but with a random spacing against an oak kitchen (at the far end).

Here’s an example of how to use the method above. All measurements taken are using the device’s own internal light source which is called D65. So straight away you are comparing colours from the same starting point. Using the device, I took measurements of Maggie’s stunning marble work surface. To the naked eye, it appeared a white slab with light grey & dark grey veining. However when measured, the white majority of the slab belonged to the yellow Hue Family & the darkest veins sat in the Yellow-Red Hue Family. Taking further sample measurements of the stone slab flooring, confirmed they too sat in the Yellow Hue Family. So to tie both flooring and work surface together with colour for the island & kitchen units, it made sense to begin looking for colours within the same Hue Family. Getting a Hue Angle reading gives a spot to plot it on the Wheel. The info also gives other key attributes for each colour, making comparison much simpler. Maggie knew she wanted a dark colour for the island, a mid tone for the cupboards & something lighter again for the walls. It’s a new mode of working for most of us home owners, but it’s actually just working with the information companies use to make the colours in the first place. And so it’s a much more objective starting point to finding the right colour for the job. I wish you lots of luck on your quest!

kitchen floor tiles : to the wall or just to kitchen unit?

You're the customer so have it how you want. Its more expensive to tile wall to wall which is why lots of kitchens are only tiled up to the legs, but its getting more and more popular to have the kitchen fully tiled before fitting like they do on the continent. When we have a kitchen to fit and its been tiled we lay hardboard over the floor to protect it, so it is an extra small cost. Accidents can happen though like dropping the oven but that could of been an old existing tiled floor that could be chipped and no replacement tiles available. Also its harder for your fitter to install as he has to scribe and seal all your decor panels to the floor when its been tiled is another reason installers prefer it to be tiled afterwards.

As mentioned by the others, having tiles and upstands together would look rather bizarre. I’d suggest removing the upstands and adding white or dark grey tiles. You could also add white tiles with dark grey designs to maintain the colour scheme that you’ve got going. Tiles would also be much easier to clean, and if you choose dark grey tiles, any stains wouldn’t be visible at all. I recently got my entire kitchen redesigned with the help of these kitchen fitters called Saturn Interiors. They took care of all the minor and major details, so I didn’t have to worry about any of it. If you want to, you could consult with them about this issue. I think they could provide you with better solutions too.
