Hobs in islands???

Open plan space, we are having two islands...hob in one island or against an outside wall???

Hi,

I think this would depend a lot on how you are planning to use the kitchen and your lifestyle.

Hobs in Islands can be very effective. As if you also have a breakfast bar as part of the island then it can create a great social point for guests, as well as the chef, and means that no one is left out of conversation.

However you also need to consider how the hob will be extracted.

There are lots of options for Island hobs either ducted or recirculating, if you don't often cook a lot of strong smelling or greasy food, recirculating will be fine. But if you do you get a lot higher extraction rate from ducted, but the longer the air takes to get outside the worse it gets. So if this sounds more like how you will be using the kitchen I would suggested putting the hob against the outside wall so that the air is taken straight out of the kitchen.

You also need to think about how to get power/gas to the island. A suspended floor will be relatively straight forward, but a solid floor will be more problematic. Remember also you will need space either side of the hob to put pans down, utensils etc, so its not just a case of having a hob. Its a hob plus!!

We regularly position hobs and sinks to suit different circumstances - for example - in Heathers kitchen the hob suited the island better as they were social people and cooking and entertaining were a key part of the whole room design. In Carolina’s kitchen it was more a bank of tall storage on the perimeter wall with a long peninsula that was ‘where it all happens’ as that suited that whole room area, and their family. In my own kitchen my island is purely for prep and the cooking and sink are both on the perimeter walls ! If you cook really fragrant food - then lots of people who do prefer to vent straight outside via a wall - but sometimes you can vent strait up though a flat roof ! So no one size fits all. It’s s combination of what suits you and your building and circumstances ! Either way - a designer worth their salt will discuss lots of things with you to get the low down on how your kitchen might best work safely, efficiently and to suit you and your family!

We prefer a hob on the island, we also agree with your husband that new induction technology will be the safest option for you and your family. The rings only get hot when a pan is on them and when a pan is removed, yes there is still heat there, however it is not scalding hot. It is also more sociable in our opinion to have the hob on the island is you are entertaining people. In regards to the extraction, you could ask your builder/kitchen installer to build a drop ceiling detail the same size and shape of your island to set the island location and have an extractor built into it which wouldn't be in your eye sight, you can also get external motors which boost the power and strength making the extraction work better. I agree with siobhanmcgee90 re sinks on islands - I think they have the potential to be really messy. I also don't spend all that much time at the sink because most stuff goes in the dishwasher. I spend more time at the hob so to me it makes sense to have that facing out into the room. We have a Bora hob on our island and the sink elsewhere (2x400 bowls - bigger bowl in utility room for big pans/dog/etc). We love having the hob on the island - it's sociable when you're cooking. But you do need to know how you are extracting and I don't know whether you can have it extracting to the outside from there as there are maximum lengths for the underfloor ducting and I'm not sure what's beyond the wall to the left - is that the outside, or another house? (The max length depends on how many bends there are in the ducting). But you can have it recirculating. Have you considered all of this? I spent weeks with my builder and Bora (on and off!) planning the extraction so if you haven't yet sorted all of that (only asking as you don't mention extraction in your post) you may struggle to get it decided today. It all looks gorgeous by the way, and you will love having the open plan space with a baby/toddler/bigger child - we are at teenager stage now and still love having an open plan family space.

Just finished our project and toyed with putting the hob or sink in the island - in the end I put them both against the wall and left the island as a work area. I didn't like the idea of kids/friends hovering over the cooking area and the pressure to keep clean/tidy would be too much. Just my personal opinion.

Also consider the walk from hob to sink ( think heavy pasta pot to be drained ) you want a short uninterrupted route !!

This is one of our recent designs that will hopefully help you in your decision, either way! The elevated breakfast bar makes the island a bit of a social space to cook without guests getting in the way! There's also deep storage drawers underneath for pots, pans and other cooking bits and pieces. The sink is right behind the island, as is the fridge/freezer and the wall-mounted ovens, creating a good kitchen work triangle between the island and the back wall of the kitchen.
