I can see you like panelling which would add some character. You could add some art on the wall that hangs over the stairs which will zone the stairs area (although you don't need panelling for that!). You could alternatively just create the chimney breast and panel that for a more budget friendly option. Hard to work out if it fits but can the sofa go in front of the stairs as that would also break it up

Adding floor length curtains to the window would also help to break up the wall.

You have some nice features such as the fireplace, mantle mirror, window and stairs, but they are drowned out by that too busy, rather dated, paper. I personally am not keen on feature wallpaper and much prefer painted walls. Easier to change too! Just paint the wall pale cream or pale gray, nothing garish, and I'm sure you'll see an improvement with very little expense. Good luck!
