Which wall should be feature wall?

I am decorating my 11 year old son's room. I want to do one blue feature wall - I am thinking of Dulux Sapphire Springs 3. I was debating doing the whole room in that colour but think it might be too much so decided to do one feature wall with the rest in a white (I think). I can't work out which wall though! As you walk in his room, the wall opposite the door has a large sash window. The walls to the left and right are wider with the right one having a Victorian fireplace and the left-hand wall being the only plain wall in the room (the final wall having the door in it). The bed goes against the left-hand wall. Which wall should be the feature wall - the one with the fireplace? If so, should I do the whole wall or just the chimney breast or just the two alcoves? Thank you!

The fireplace alcoves sound good. Is the bed wall a long or short wall? I'm assuming short if they're wider but just wanted to check :) It may also look nice with a pale grey

Any pics? Tricky without seeing and will partly depend on where you are putting furniture, but if the wall with the fireplace if fairly symmetrical (equal wall on either side of the fireplace), then that is probably the one to go for

Usually, it'd be the fireplace wall that gets the feature colour. But you also need to consider how that will impact on the visual perception of the space. Also, have you asked your son's opinion? At 11 he is likely to have ideas of what he'd like in his room.

Thank you guys for suggestions - I like the idea of coloured blinds in the windows Pat Oliver designs - trouble is, we are quite close to the road hence why we chose in the end the wooden Venetian blinds for privacy - although with the wall colour they make everything look orange (the colour on walls is "hot sand" by homebase but is more orangy than I had hoped :-( Its very hard to know what colour to paint the room with the biscuit carpet, and natural wood...I can't really change too much as we don't have a budget. I was hoping to get the look and definition I wanted by paint/paper...but might speak to my hubby to see if we could get some more shelving. Minnie - yes good idea about putting back a little of the wall - I was thinking the same myself - although there is only one door to the room and it is smack bang in the middle on opposite wall which makes things more complicated. :-( I imagine it would be expensive though as you say. I have been trying to find pics of rooms with 2 chimney breasts myself so if you do find some, please can you post them for me as I would love to see them. Thank you both again for your comments xx

update - it was looking good until the computer etc went in, now there's WAY too much black. I do have a set of ladder shelves with a cupboard to build in as well, so I'm hoping I can put most of it in that. Failing that, it'll be another £70 for a white computer case :P I'm also planning on a 4 piece strip metal spot light to replace that bulb, then direct the spots at the pictures etc

Sharon, this is a very difficult question to answer without knowing more about your project. For example, 1. What is on the internal side of these three existing rooms; are there other rooms and if so what is their use? 2. Where is the kitchen at the moment and what is are the other two rooms at the moment? 3. What does the outside of the house look like? A photograph of the elevation where you are thinking of the extension would be useful. 4. What is your brief with regards to dining facilities in the Kitchen? It is difficult to give you a subjective view without more information. As a generalisation, I personally like kitchens where the Islands are looking onto the garden and I like Islands where there is a hob as this allows the cook to engage with their guests or family whilst cooking.

Good point about getting your son's input. That said, if I left the design of my daughter's room up to her it would be all black!! Probably with a few foxes and wolves....

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, the bed will be on the wall opposite the fireplace wall? I'd paint the wall with the bed on it blue and possibly the chimney breast part of the wall opposite too.

Behind the bed, and Carolins idea of also painting the fireplace wall is a good idea,IMO.
