Uplighting

I am in the process of redoing the sitting room in a 1930s house....beautiful spaces but a bit mean when it comes to light fittings. Currently avoiding any floorboards lifting etc, so instead of having recessed light in the ceilings am thinking of adding some recessed lights in the floor ( add a layer of light at floor level and would be good to highlight some art on the wall.) This is doable as the flooring is being changed......any ideas how to go about this please?

Hi @shanagarry80, thanks for your comments! I'm not at home right now so I can't be sure how big the extractor fan actually is but it is over a 90cm hob and oven, so must be at least 90cm. It doesn't look particularly large in situ and the inbuilt lights are very good for illuminating the cooking area. Have a look at Gutmann's website; as I said in one of my earlier comments, other companies do make similar extractors but our kitchen people thought this one best, however our kitchen is now 3 years old and a lot can happen in that time! Hi Daisy The space you’re creating looks very interesting and it’s good that you’re really thinking about the lighting. If you have the opportunity, I’d consider using downlighter/s to highlight the picture in the lounge, as that would be a direct form of light and can really pick out the artwork whilst doubling up as background lighting. In the far right of the image below, you’ll see a painting highlighted by a single downlighter that works really well within the space. Regarding the pendants in the dining area, whether they’ll provide enough light will all be dependent on which particular pendant you choose. For example a 100W glass pendant will offer more light than a 60W one. Regardless of the power though it’s always good to layer lighting in living spaces, so I’d consider having wall lights or 5amp lamp sockets on an extra circuit. These will help to create a lovely ambient mood, just right for when you’re socialising after dinner with a glass of wine in your hand! Hi. We have a dark corner in our hallway where the coats are kept just by the cellar door. We have a lamp on a table and use the Philips Hue motion sensor so the lamp comes on f we walk close by it and we have set it to stay on r 1 minute. (brightness controlled via app and can be different day and night)- you could consider this for your lamp whilst you decide on the stairs. I quite like the examples in this image (not the style) but the central statement pendants running down the central apex of the ceiling with uplighting recessed in the wooden ridge/coving around the perimeter. They’ve even attached some spots as down-lights. I would personally install uplighting that is easy to swap out at the end of it’s life (off the shelf, standard size LED bulbs/spotlights etc)
