Lighting Advice - Wall washers? Uplighting?

Hi, I'm after some advice on lightning for 2 locations in my house refurbishment

1. Living Room. I'm having a central pendant but aren't sure whether to have wall washers or uplighting behind the sofa on the side wall (without chimney breast) to provide another option and illuminate a picture

2. Kitchen Diner. I'm having a pendant at both ends of the 'diner' part of the room (one over a dining table and another over a seating area)

but worry this won't be enough light. Should I have wall washers, uplighting or spotlights against the side wall? I will be having lighting over the kitchen island.

I've marked proposed locations of pendants on the plan.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Daisy

The space you’re
creating looks very interesting and it’s good that you’re really thinking about
the lighting. If you have the opportunity, I’d consider using downlighter/s to
highlight the picture in the lounge, as that would be a direct form of light
and can really pick out the artwork whilst doubling up as background lighting. In
the far right of the image below, you’ll see a painting highlighted by a single
downlighter that works really well within the space. Regarding the
pendants in the dining area, whether they’ll provide enough light will all be
dependent on which particular pendant you choose. For example a 100W glass
pendant will offer more light than a 60W one. Regardless of the power though it’s
always good to layer lighting in living spaces, so I’d consider having wall lights or
5amp lamp sockets on an extra circuit. These will help to create a lovely ambient
mood, just right for when you’re socialising after dinner with a glass of wine
in your hand!

Hi Jane there are several ways you can highlight a dark living room. I would first of all decide what the best features are in the room and emphasise them with light. You could use either floor recessed mini LED uplights or small surface mounted plug in uplights to highlight window reveals or your fireplace for example as shown in the images below. Surface mounted uplights highlight the fireplace, in combination with downlights and decorative lighting in this image. Surface mounted uplights highlight the window reveal in this image. Recessed uplights highlight the window and door reveals in this image. Using low level uplights to highlight architectural features brings drama to the space and when used in combination with decorative lighting and downlights provides different layers of light that you can adjust to suit your mood. Hi There. Congratulations to your daughter! I think its definitely worth investigating the costs of covering the kitchen / diner area with spot lights as covering the entire area with 2 ceiling pendants may not provide adequate lighting when there is no sunlight coming from the living room windows. The lounge area can easily be covered using lamps but it is important to have sufficient lighting in the kitchen area. If spot lights are not an option, you can also consider LED lighting for under cabinet lighting for the wall units as well as the base units. Kitchen Update: I finally got round to sorting my kitchen out and have had a storage banquette and pantry cupboard built. It looks great and I'm very happy with it. However what colour cushions should I get and also should I stain the reclaimed wood table top? It's a small kitchen so i've kept the colour neutral (grey, white, greyish duck egg blue) but I'm concerned that it might start to all look a bit mitchy-matchy and a bit 'twee' if I add cushions the same sort of colour. Would a navy blue stripe work, for instance? Thank you!
