POLL: Outdoor Christmas lights - love or loathe?

If there's anything that signals the arrival of Christmas, it's Christmas lights. Strewn across streets, draped around doorways, they're difficult to escape! For those of us that love them it's pretty magical, but for those of us that find it all a bit much, it can become difficult to get away from their perennial twinkle and sometimes multicoloured glare.

But which side are you on - do you love or loathe Christmas lights? Vote in our poll!

Mostly love them, but it depends - twinkly and magical (like the photo above) then yes, cheesy and brash - not so much.

It a bright, fresh and exciting downfall that can be enjoyed by all, sledging, walking, building snowmen, snowball fights. Yes there is a downside/s to it but then would we not want a nice, hot, sunsoaked day just because we burn in the sun. Just have to go with it and after all it doesn't snow that often not to be able to put up with the inconviences every so often. 59 year old working grannie no spring chicken. Let it snow just be careful not to break a leg.

Dark green looks great in the kitchen! It would work especially well with some natural wood, either in an island or as a contrasting cabinet. A wash of dark green, with the natural grain of the wood showing through, would also be a lovely but slightly more subtle way to play around with this colour scheme.

Definitely hard surfaces all the way - you can refinish them when they get tired and are really practical for children/pets/outdoors lifestyle. We used a mixture of new polished concrete, exposed flagstones and original elm boards at our miner's cottages and don't find it cold or austere.

Agreed - I used to love colourful lights when I was little but these days it's white lights or nothing!

Twinkly and limited are the best. Having said that, I love visiting the kitsch and OTT lights in those roads known for them. Franklin Road in Auckland is the best I've seen.

Its mostly for children so who cares? Not everything has to be "designed" and uber-stylish. Imagine how gloomy a northern hemisphere winter would be without them...

This is something I really miss now that I'm living in England. I grew up in Canada and there only the odd house didn't have lights outside. In England it's much less commonly done. I do put my own lights out though, every year :)

All (warm) white or (skillfully done:) over the top colour. Not loving the blue white LED lights that have now become the norm ..

As above, stay away from coloured and stick to the warm white variety. I'd accept a small twinkle or static.

I absolutely love Christmas lights, and it doesn't matter what colour or style, the more the merrier. I've only got one issue: Please people, take them down in January at the latest. By all means go all out from December til 12th night, in fact I applaud you, but if there's one thing I hate is defunct Christmas decorations hanging round in April. In fact I've seen some people leave them up all year and they think as long as they don't switch them on it's OK. No, sorry, we can still see them....And you're killing the magic!

What do you mean by "pretending to be American"? In New England, for instance, the custom is to have a soft white candle in every window, lit every evening, along with white lights outlining some windows, doors, bushes. Are you thinking of the insane displays featured on some TV shows? Not representative of our nation.

Like most people commenting here, I absolutely adore them if they are just white and classy. Don't care much for twinkling or a multicolour display, unless it's a really great display, that is so kitsch, that it's great because of that!

Yes only warm white will do, but I must admit I cant help but smile at the OTT houses.

I love that look, so atmospheric and welcoming. adds warmth and light for visitors or returning home at night. I'm not keen on cold blue/or green lights or multicolour 'Vegas' style epilepsy-inducing overkill. I like to keep it soft and gentle. no point in saying 'tasteful' as everyone differs but definitely nothing that saps the national grid.
