POLL: How often do you light candles?
Perhaps it's the Scandinavian influences in my life, but I tend to light a few candles from the moment I get up and keep them going throughout the day (if I'm at home). There's something about the soft light in the morning that just makes me feel oh-so-cosy.
Not everybody lights candles every day however, for some they're reserved for romantic dinners and special occasions only.
So I'm interested to know - how often do you light candles?

Comments (15)Candles seem to have a calming effect on people. I prefer unscented candles, as scented candles can overwhelm a small space, especially a table designated for eating. Comments (40)I never, ever change mine. I use a butcher block and a huge thick wooden cutting board, only taking care to keep my fruits from suddenly tasting like onions or garlic. Studies have shown that a wooden cutting board is naturally resistant to bacteria, so I scrape and then wash mine off with soap and water after use. All this absurd paranoia about cleanliness is the product of marketing, not science, and the supposedly more sterile plastic ones are actually much better petri dishes for bacterial growth, which is why they must be cleaned and disposed of regularly. Comments (5)Ready-made dinners have come a long way since the synthetically-filled, dubious-tasting, health-hazard products of the 80s and 90s (although I've at least survived into middle-age unscathed by the odd Findus Crisy Pancake!) Comments (10)In the family sitting room, we have a 5 arm pendant light on a dimmer switch, with 3 matching 2-arm wall lights. One further single wall light. We have one desk lamp, and lighting above the glass shelves of the alcove and in the inglenook fire place. The OH also has a floor standing, adjustable angle light for reading. In the other sitting room we have, 4 down lights, a centre ceiling light with 5 arms, 4 table lamps in the corners, 2 wall lights and lights in shelving alcove and in the wall of bookcases.
