I would always rather invest in stunning furniture than spend money on more permanent changes. In my experience you can make any space look great with the right furniture and decor. Rather than spend money on something structural I would work with the space you have with furniture that works better than the heavy farmhouse style. The nicest furniture in the room is the sideboard so I would build on that. I'd look at something like Gubi Beetle dining chairs to bring in an organic streak. Not cheap but cheaper than building in storage (the next best option) or enlarging the window which won't make much difference - and you can take them with you if you move! You could look at Made.com for a cheaper but complementary table. Then a decent lampshade - perhaps Tom Dixon Etch - a side lamp on the sideboard and lots of plants and pots to empathise the organic, cosy nature of the room. Finish with some pictures in the wall and you have a lovely, cosy, earthy room that feels like being down Alice's rabbit hole rather than under the stairs. Good luck.

I had to pay an additional £2K to have the elec and gas meters moved outside. Remember to include heating in the new room otherwise it will only be used 8 months a year! I have found it very useful as my elderly parents now have difficulty with the stairs when they visit and the only other loo is in the bathroom. No problems until someone wants to spend a long time in the bath or to take ages doing their makeup.

Hi there, I would agree with the above comment. The plants sit well but if you do decide to fit any storage etc I would make them floating storage space so your beautiful floor can still be seen and this will also draw the eye into the space further. Perhaps you could put a floating desk in with some cool lighting and make it into a internet snug or a cosy reading corner. Here's a picture of a hall cupboard I converted for a Client in Edinburgh which also added value to the property by creating a new room.This is a more quirky industrial style than the sleek design of your hallway but demonstrates what can be done with a small space and how effective clever lighting can be too. We put 'hello' letter lighting in this space but a simple phrase such as 'boo' might add a sense of fun under your stair.
