Cable railings for deck. Problems coming loose?

We are getting ready to have a deck constructed, which overlooks a lake. We were scheduled to do horizontal cable railings. However, my contractor is now saying that his rep is telling him about frequent problems with the balusters coming loose after a few years and people being unhappy.

He wants us to use Invis-A-Rail, which is a stainless steel vertical poles system, rather than under tension cables. I can't find any reviews on this.

Does anyone have any experience with the latter? Or have you heard problems with the cable balusters? The deck project is quickly adding up in price, and I don't want to cheapen the whole thing if the invis-a-rail ends up looking like a cheap finish.

Our deck is Azek Vintage Mahogany with a band board of Vintage Cypress. Our railings are cedar and my husband installed the railing without a top rail to preserve the view. It is a little more difficult this way, but he still did a 40 x 14 foot deck in a day. Stairs took longer because of the angles. Because the steel rods support the drink rail, you can do this which wouldn't be possible with cable. If you are interested in this system make sure you google Invis-A-Rail, not invisirail which is a completely different product.

Never heard of this problem. Could it be someone is getting kick back for selling a different product?

does the cable system not have a toggle for tightening? I could see if the deck and post are made from wood and when the cable is installed and the wood shifts over time the cable coming less taunt, but a toggle to tighten it periodically should do the trick? they even make the shielded. As for the toggle backing off, some thread lock or a look into a locking toggle. This is just some thoughts, I am not a deck builder and I have not installed cable balusters, but I am a mechanic and put in a cable across my patio for a curtain rod and its working out very nicely. That being said, my curtain cable isn't in any danger of being a hazard to children, which is one of the main reasons that it is very important to have the cables taunt.

Thanks again :) Hadn't thought about Christmas! Oops, you're right of course, I will have to grab samples if I can and line them up and see what they look like. We've just had the window ripped out and the increase in light is amazing! This at least means I wont be too worried incorporating red in fear of the room looking too dark. The chair rail is a good idea, I'm assuming it's similar to what I referred to as a dado rail? Wooden trim halfway height around the room? We've just ripped ours off, haha, merely because I wanted to completely change the look of the room. Hmm, maybe I've been premature with that decision, it would have allowed me to add a strong colour and still be able to balance it.... Our children are now grown up, one left home, one back and forwards as attending University so no issues with small sticky fingers. However, we do have an incredibly energetic springer spaniel, so I do need the option to 'paint over' any areas he decided he particularly likes! :D

Thanks you to you all for your great feed back. Claire to answer your question, lighting is such a great investment and essential to any UK garden where the light fades and for many months your garden is appreciated through the cold months from the warmth of the interior space. What good is it if you can't see it in the evening! its not too late to lay cables along the back of your flower beds, the cable can be laid just below the surface of the soil for ease of maintenance. Lighting up foliage is the best way to illuminate a garden. It softens the light in much the same way as lamp light in a room. Its always best not to see the actual source of the light but instead highlight plants and features such as walls, sculptural elements or water features. Its worth every penny. Bearing in mind that you have young children, the focus of the garden in my opinion should be on them. A small patio/dining/relaxing area for adults near the house, and perhaps also at the end of the garden would be lovely. I would also have most of the garden redone in grass (real grass!) with room to play. And I would keep the fence... its the most practical having children near a river, even if they're not babies anymore. I would probably break up the unusual shape of the garden with a few pots, planters and borders 'sticking' out into the garden so the eye is drawn away from the sharp, narrow end. I agree with what was said above though about just living with the space for a bit and seeing how you use it.

Well it's great to have the comments. It's actually taken away my anxiety about the room and I can think clearly now. Sandra your advice about what makes you happy in a room made me smile.. you are right. You also confirmed my thoughts on a cast iron fireplace, it would be too imposing, and I think a wood burner would become a burden after a while as well as being a bit "cottagy," I have thought about a gas stove, a slightly more contemporary looking one in a rendered, painted recess, with a reclaimed surround, or open gas fire? I'd love to see your fireplace Sandra when you get the time to post a photo. Minnie, thank you for the link. The ideas are so good I do like the white fireplace, and the nod to the 1930's is good advice. I think now I will start to enjoy this renovation. I am going to try the tv in another area of the room, although my husband doesn't like them on the wall. It is a good idea on the wall near the alcove though, I need to have a good look at the room with fresh eyes. Love the idea of the curtains and slimline sofas. It's all great advice and Nicola thank you for your offer with information regarding the bay pole from Fabricant. I am based in the South East so I will be very interested when it comes to doing the curtains... which I think will be a long way off yet. I feel I'm getting somewhere now by eliminating the wood burner and the cast iron fireplace. I am so glad I posted on here! I'll be planning and researching this week end. Much appreciated.

We recommend that the cables are put under 225 pounds of tension each. You can refer to the resources we have available for designing and constructing an adequate frame out of wood or metal that will withstand the tension of the cables. Our cables are designed to be easily re-tensioned when necessary, which is not true of all cable infill.

We just used invis-a-rail on our deck. we had heard about issues with cable as well and didn’t want a horizontal product because of safety issues with young kids. I was nervous about invis-a-rail because of the lack of reviews but it is an amazing product. looks like cable but super easy to install. My husband did it himself in a day for our large deck. The stairs were a little trickier but doable. I would recommend this product over cable.

Hi. Your deck looks fantastic. I am thinking about using invis-a-rail in the same sort of context as you. Question - how tall are your railings? My only hesitation about the invis-a-rail system is that the vertical rods are only 30 inches, and my railing needs to be 42 inches for code. I don't love the idea of large top and bottom rail boards to make up the height.

Has anyone else recently used the Invis-a-rail system? This is only review that i have found and it is now 2024. This system would be perfect for us. Their website does not give a phone number for questions. They make regular posts on Facebook, but no comments have been made pro or con.
