We recently solved a wardrobe shortage problem for a couple by converting half of their roofspace into a walk-in wardrobe & dressing room accessed from stairs located where their old sliderobes used to be. It's a fantastic space giving loads of space (including a very large shoe collection!) and each had one full side of the room for their own use when we last saw it - I suspect the wife will soon have a much larger share though! There is also a dressing table with professional lighting around the mirror for make-up. The stairs make a great feature in the bedroom and the fact that the dressing room can't be seen from the bedroom removes the urgency for daily tidying!

As you suggest storage needs to be thought about and planned for - I see others have made some interesting contributions. I see support for open clothes rails, built in and other thought provoking arrangements. Did you use the water based or oil baser Zinsser primer? I think the oil based would be better for this job. Did you clean them with diluted sugar soap first?How strange that it peeled off! You could try wallpapering them. There are some fantastic wallpapers available now. This would also make the doors appear flat instead of the dated routed out groove around them. You could also attach a false door to the existing out of a very thin material if necessary or replace the doors.
