Help! High voltage electrical cable advice

Long story but in a nutshell we are just starting an extension but have an 11,000 volt electrical cable running very close, if not under where it is going to be built. Has anyone had experience of this? Have quite a few questions! Currently trying to liaise with UK power network about this but they are hard to contact. Is there a certain distance foundations need to be from cable? Can we duct it? Any idea of cost if we have to move it? Thanks!

Hello Fiona, It looks like you have a place which could be nice with a little care. In answer to your questions: As many coats as it takes. Paint a coat, look at it when it's dry, if you can still see the paint underneath it needs another coat. Usually 2-3 coats are needed but more for covering really bright colours like that small patch of purple in the living room. I can't suggest a specific brand for another country. A folding screen / room divider would definitely work without causing problems. They are not difficult to make or you can buy one. You absolutely should not surround it on all sides without checking what it is and how much airflow it needs. Probably treated wood for outside furniture. Plastic is cheaper but doesn't look that good and can risk being blown off the terrace in high winds. Metal is more expensive and more likely to get stolen if there's a chance of that. Maybe look out for second hand stuff? Floor lamps would be the obvious choice for light. You can get cheap ones from somewhere like IKEA or again maybe second hand. This is the biggest problem you've listed. Here in the UK the laws for renting say bathrooms and kitchens need extractor fans. Perhaps check if there's a similar law there? If there isn't, you can ask the landlord if you can fit one and if you're lucky bargain for them to pay part of the cost. They are not that expensive. You probably won't convince them to help you. Those look like the remains of roots from ivy or something similar, and might be hard to get off. You could probably rent a pressure washer and do that wall and the terrace at the same time. A couple of notes on paint: - You don't need washable paint for every wall. The hall will need it, and the kitchen and bathroom (or special kitchen/bathroom paints, definitely try to get that for the bathroom) - Yes white is the cheapest colour to buy though Magnolia (yuck!) is as cheap here. White is also the worst colour to paint with as you get 'snow blind' and can't tell what you've already painted. White can also look quite cold. One thing you can do is have a painting/decorating party with your friends. You supply plenty of food and drink and they spend a few hours painting. You can get a lot done in a short time this way and it's quite fun to do. It's a lot less daunting than trying to do it all yourself.

We are mid renovation in a challenging time for everyone and are hoping to fit electric blackout blinds to a number of our bedroom windows and a normal electric blind to a living room. Does anyone have any experience/recommendations on brands, mains vs rechargeable battery, positioning of electric cable if using mains etc. please? Our difficulty is not being able to see anything and many suppliers not being open to talk to. All windows are approximately 2300 mm wide. Any advice and guidance would be appreciated, as we need to say where we want electric, if needed now. Thank you

I am about to have electric UFH by ukwarmfloor.com - a norwegian system that has been around for ages over there. ( I do not work for them in any way!) Running costs are MASSIVELY cheaper than our versions. Over there, they instal the mats under roofs, drives and on the decks of icebreakers - they know a thing or two about snow and cold, and so I am giving it a whirl in my guest bedroom and large en suite. This is a response from the man answering all my many questions: "The system as shown would use a total of around 375Wper hour to keep all the areas heated to a constant 26C at floor level. By way of comparison the most efficient cable underfloor system would use 975W per hour to achieve this, whilst a boiler & radiator system would use 750W per hour. Comparisons in terms of BTUs can be a little confusing as most standard tables stating average BTU requirements for domestic situations are based on the heat output of traditional radiators etc. So our system only uses 375W (given as approx 1279BTUs in traditional thermal conversion tables)to do the job that a traditional boiler/radiator system would need 750W to do(given as approx 2559 BTUs). Our system is primarily designed specifically to produce the same air temperature in a room as other systems but to use less power to do so. The two basic reasons for this are: The heating element is self-regulating - only ever drawing the minimum required power at any individual point across the floor to maintain the set temperature. 2. The heating element heats the entire floor area and so effectively turns the whole floor of the the room into a radiant surface, heating the entire volume of air in the room from the bottom up. This is unlike radiators, which only heat a small surface, typically at the sides of a room, or a cable or piped underfloor system which can only heat thin strips of floor, leaving most of the floor surface unheated. Because our system heats the entire area it need only heat to 26C to produce effective air temperatures in the room. Other systems have to heat to much higher temperatures to do this and so require more energy to do so." I have spent an inordinate amount of time reading everything on their system, and I am going to use it. How exciting! Everything you have detailed makes sense and is doable. A couple of things I'd suggest you consider: * Keeping some understairs storage is always really useful for coats/shoes etc as it helps clear the visual clutter. * Could you close up understairs existing door and add an additional section there and have pull out storage doors under the stairs * Then spin the utility/boiler room around into the existing dining space and make that a cloakroom/shower/utility * You can move the hall doorway as you have mentioned for through sight lines to the back? And this way you can go for double glass doors which will flood more light into the hallway. * Are you keeping the existing side door? If so you can potentially set your table with bench seating at the back wall up to the door or close off the door and give yourselves more wall space to work with. * The left wall would then be your extended bank of kitchen units and a slim island. * This then leave the doors opening to the garden at the back and the area in front for you to add in some relaxed seating for socialising.
