What kind of style do you have at the moment? (the rest of the house)
As the wall the windows are on come up a little darker a anyway, I would embrace it and go for a colour that connects with the outside (a few images attached) - just on the window wall.

Comments (5)If you don't physically need a handrail on that side you could just rebuild the wall at that point, only to about 18 inches high topped off with as wide a board as you can fit. Then you could use it to display something, put those things on that are waiting to go upstairs, or a perch when you have loads off guests, family or grandchildren around. Another way round the problem, but probably too late for you now, is to build the bottom couple of steps from a different material, say tile or stone to match a floor if the rest is to be carpeted, and start the newel/handrail at the changeover point....See Moredado rail in hall to break up wall?
Comments (33)thanks all! Would definately have to start it just past the 2nd step anyway due to the light switch. it's existing staircase and room @minnie101 but we just added the en-suite. It originally had the rail to the right on the short side so nothing on the return area. That's what I was wondering as well ie the return part - it's only one step down from the bedroom floor so technically shouldn't need a short rail there. Will measure it just up to the top main step then - wasn't sure if I could take it further up or if it would look odd. Shame as I saw a lovely anthracite metal rail but it only went to 2m! bah....See MoreHave hall paneling had its day? HELP!
Comments (6)No it hasn’t had its day, especially in a period property, and a 30s house does count as as that, in my eyes anyway, so I would reinstate it. I don’t think it will ever be out of fashion in a period home. I wouldn’t go too high as that could prove overbearing. Also paint the panelling to give it a modern twist....See More- 9 years ago

We would love to get in there and install some beautiful shaker paneling. It would really give the whole stair wall a grand feeling. The picture below is of a beaded panel type but larger squares and without the beading would really look nice.

- 9 years agoHi Gillian do you like the colour of the wall as it is at the moment? Personally I think the colour of the wall is fine, I wouldn't be inclined to paint it a different colour as a feature wall nor would I paint it a darker colour as I think this will make the wall feel like it's crashing down on top of you! Rather than painting the wall would you look at changing the wall lights to something bigger that make more of a statement? I would also be looking at installing shutters/Venetian blinds/pleated blinds on the lower windows and the door. Do you have a photo of the right hand side-I wondered if there is room for a window seat there or a large potted plant to break up the wall area.

Hi. Love the window. I also like the paint TBH. It does feel as if you need a statement pendant light or change the wall lights as Campo said. The only thing I would say is changing the bulbs is tricky (our landing light currently isn't working for that reason!) so would get the longest life led's you can! If you really wanted to paint I would consider painting something at dado height. It will be far easier for ongoing maintenance with dirty fingerprints. I also like the last pic with the red handrail which was in a house with 6 floors and it was painted to draw eyes from the walls. Or you could look for much larger art as mentioned before.
