If you want your mirror to stand out or to create more of a feature why don't you paint the middle third of the wall a deep navy, darkish but warm grey or even a darker shade colour of your chest of drawers? Will make your fireplace & stove & mirror stand out. This will give it a bit more structure and depth.. but am liking it. Any finished pictures?

So many great ideas, love all of them and so much to think about! All of the suggestions have definitely made me think more widely about options- going to think about upcycling, check out antique centres, look at higher options which I hadn’t thought about at all and look at all the great options that have been suggested. I think I’ve definitely discounted just grey and going to try something a bit different! Thanks for the nice comments about the decoration too, we love it so far- before it had horrible old damaged laminate and a patio door with a fire escape where the big window is, which we removed and put bifold doors downstairs so we didn’t need the door anymore.

In all honesty this does not seem a practical idea. Washing machines are 45 - 50cm deep before you alllow for the plumbing connection. There is no obvious availability of plumbing in the location. You will have to cut holes in the rear of the sideboard in addition to losing the front doors & drawers. In trying to save this piece of furniture you end up with nothing left of it except the sides & top. If it does work out I’d be very interested in seeing the completed project!
