Aluminium or Plastic Bath?

Interested to know if people recommend either an aluminium or plastic bath and the reasons why as I am just about to refurb my bathroom. In my last house I had an aluminium bath and felt that it left some marks when cleaning it although that maybe my OCD kicking in ha ha. I would lobe to hear your views. Thanks so much in advance.

It's a fact that the heat retention on an acrylic bath is far greater than a steel bath. In the bathroom industry steel baths are now considered a last option as they loose the heat really quick. Solid stone baths such as marble also loose heat really quickly, this is why all our stone baths are broken down from Limestone and mixed with special resins. Once the mixture has been moulded and set our stone baths look and feel like natural surface but have the head retention of an acrylic bath. Lusso Stone Freestanding Baths

Look lovely but no room for a freestanding bath sadly as I have a small bathroom.

I had the same issue, decided to bite the bullet and replace all the windows with aluminium like the shiny new extension. I think consistency is a key part of design, and I have not regretted my choice. I am too much of a stickler for detail not to become increasingly annoyed at the difference.

Thanks all. That's really helpful. @bchillman5 - love your flush windows, and the astragal lines - what manufacturer are they? And you are right - it is a very similar look house, and I agree that the paler grey suits the stone better. So thank you - I am very grateful for this image. Very happy to have found this resource... now to move onto my interior design dilemmas!!

shower bath next to a window?

Our bath with over-bath shower is in the same position as you're proposing, i.e. under a window. The windowsill is tiled with a slight forward slope and we have a waterproof roller blind, inset within the window recess, both for privacy when showering and keeping water off the window. Like others have said, some form of window covering is needed to preserve modesty when showering when standing so relatively close to a window, even with 'privacy glass' in the window. All I do is give the blind a quick wipe over with a microfibre cloth to mop up any splashes before rolling it back up once I've donned my bathrobe robe! Our bathroom is approx. the same size as yours and having the bath/shower on the window wall does seem to be best layout.

I have a steel bath and it got chipped almost immediately when someone knocked over a heavy plant pot into it. It's otherwise nice but I don't think I'd notice if it was plastic, and it'd have been cheaper – and not chipped! I think the bath panel makes more difference; I have horizontal wooden planks (they're actually slimline hardwood decking planks) and this more than the bath material sets the style of the room I think. I'm about to refurb another bathroom and am going for plastic with a tongue and groove panel. Have you decided on yours yet?

Hi,

One point to consider is that aluminium is a very good thermal conductor, especially in comparison to plastic. This means that the aluminium bath will be better at heat retention of the water.

I was going to say the opposite, I've had steel and iron baths in other houses and the water seems to go cold quite quickly, the one I have now is acrylic and is warm to touch and seems to retain the heat better. The only slight downside is that I chose a longer, deeper, wider bath and it does take a bit longer to fill to a suitable wallowing depth.

It may not be as straightforward as I thought... After visiting a couple of bathroom showrooms we were informed that steel/ aluminium baths were better at retaining the heat of the water than acrylic baths but have only ever used acrylic baths and do find that they do retain the heat of water for a decent amount of time...

In theory, as metal is a good conductor of heat rather than an insulator, a metal bath should cool down quicker. We have a nice thick acrylic bath and that retains the heat very well.
