felizlady, I hear what you're saying, but I cannot be on site at all times to manage the work. That is the superintendent's job. And the tile pattern for this bath was discussed many times. I also have it in writing.

I agree that the grout lines can probably be minimized with a dark grout. I'm really not wanting to rip all of that out and start over, but in my eyes it looks pretty bad and haphazard. Not sure if I can live with it or not.

Thanks Beth. I agree with you that if I don't like it now, I never will. The waterproofing should be okay (I think) as they did a fiberglass and resin lining around the shower that seems pretty bulletproof. The 1/3 offset is what was always discussed and I have that in my selections document as well as in an email conversation. The GC/superintendent has been less than stellar overall. I'm going to bring it up with them and see how it goes.

I can't believe the complaints about these GC's failing to show up at important times like this. He is responsible for relaying the info to the tile guys. now if he did and they screwed up, it's on them. Don't be surprised if the both of them point fingers at each other. But ultimately, because you have it in writing, it's the GC's ass. No excuse for that layout.

Rip it out and start over. I wouldn't budge on this. The 2nd picture is really an eye sore concerning the overlap. There's zero random pattern.

why is it random in the first place? I've never seen it done like this before. Maybe on flooring when it's random length, but on fixed length, there should be a set pattern. They have to redo.

I would talk to the installer and the GC but separtly and get the whole story....being me I do not like the style you asked for; those stairstep grid would drive me crazy as I am more random.....did you ask the tiler why he was doing it that way; there might be a reason, as in saving time and money for you or the GC? Get to the bottom of it. But hey me I would say OK and move on and finish the house...it looks really nice and the colors blend beautifully. But it is your house and you money and your headache after all.

Im not seeing proper waterproofing @ critical wall to tub deck corner and its to late now with tile imstalled to make it right. Makes me question the drywall im seeing at top perimiter and what else i cant see. Sorry but id take extensive pics of the shower when they remove tiles and look closer at the build as much as aesthetic layout.- best

Tundra Finish Works LLC - It was inspected (by my independent inspector) and passed. The blueboard you see starts >6 feet off the floor. All wet areas are hardie backer board over a fiberglass and resin surround with redgard waterproofing. What are you specifically seeing at the tub deck corner that concerns you? They will be ripping all this out anyways, so there is an opportunity to make corrections.

In regards to saving time and money, in the stair step you have to cut each tile exactly the same and make sure you start centered, hence more time to do the job as desired....random means you run the tiles and cut at the end and start the next row, faster, less tile, random look.....time and product more or less indicate more or less money.....but .....to each his own, and no offense taken.....a house with four corners is much cheaper to build than a house with four corners and 8 bump outs.....maybe there was a budget involved that did not cover the desires of the client after all the materials and time slot were taken care of....I have no idea but again time is money. Need more info here.

Use a grout color that blends with the tile and you'll rarely notice it.

Okay, so after some email exchanges and a meeting with my GC today, they agree that it was installed incorrectly—and that it was their error. They are going to eat the cost, remove the tile, and start over installation in the correct offset pattern.

Can't thank you all enough for your comments. I was considering accepting it as it was, but I never would have been happy with it. You all were extremely helpful in guiding me to make the right decision here.

Hello all! Just wanted to post an update—the tile has been removed and new tile installed in the correct offset pattern. I'm so happy you all pushed me to make the right decision to have it corrected. I'm very happy with the result.

Just read your whole thread. Glad it was done to your satisfaction. Just to let you know, my tile guy just told me last time he was here that a lot of manufacturers are now recommending 1/4 offset to help with lippage. It looks great!
