And I agree that a tub/shower combo would make more sense. I've just never liked them and love stepping into a walk-in shower when I'm at a hotel. The one we have now is so small (28x28) and it has a shower curtain which is horrible because it always sticks to one's legs.

I would do something like this unless the toilet plumbing can be moved (considering that in many cases that would be a major issue) but if not that would still leave plenty of room.

The problem is that, if you look at that brown and black bathroom, you can see that they are using the narrow end as the door, which you can't do (because of the toilet). I think you would find that 2-foot doorway right next to the tub a hassle every single morning. Maybe if you could make the shower just four feet in the long direction, you could put a swinging door there -- it would feel more spacious than squeezing in at the corner.

I'm not sure I could have a swinging door at the end of a 4 foot shower and still have room for the toilet. I think the door would bang into the toilet, wouldn't it? I was thinking of putting in a sliding door on runners. A pocket door won't work, unfortunately, given some weird beams that we have right outside the bathroom.

And it's an 8x8 bathroom so there is no narrow end. If you're looking at the picture of the brown/black bathroom, that's exactly what I'm envisioning in terms of layout, with the toilet to the right and the picture being taken from the doorway. Of course, I think the brown/black bathroom is bigger than 8x8, probably at least 8x9 and maybe 9x9.

as long as the door was hinged on the right, you could open it enough to get in. it would feel much less crowded than that 2-foot slider, where you're pivoting around a pane of glass.

I checked, that brown/black bathroom is 9.5 x 11, so much bigger than my space. But, I don't need a tub that large and I'm thinking of keeping any surround to a minimum. Here's what I came up with using the Maax modulr system.

Maybe I should just go with a wet room concept and hang a shower head in the center of the room! Go European. Or not.

This is a comfortable design with a shower tub combo. It looks modern, and it is very functional.

You have a 5' vanity, the correct code distance for the toilet (it's also not right by the door), you are able to fit a standard tub (you can have a very modern tub), and you have room for a linen closet or seat at the end. Using glass instead of a shower curtain would create that "updated feel" while keeping the space open.

nice! and I can say from experience that a 5' vanity can make a comfortable double if so inclined.

@thinkdesignlive, what did you decide? Do you have photos of your completed bathroom?

Did a layout for a similar size bathroom pretty much same as some of the previous pictures show, the only thing dimensions different here you have 8x8 and the bath I had was a bit larger, therefore that will only cut a few inches off from the floor area between the shower/tub and the vanity and make the shower width a bit smaller.
