Hi Shameem, that's a lovely light and airy space to work with. Are you keeping the fireplace and the features? If you're going for a period look then we think parquet flooring in a warm colour could be just the thing for the space. Here are some ideas:

I'd have a big sofa opposite the fire place with two big arm chairs either side of the fire place. Coffee table in the middle with a big Persian rug (centre ).

Heavy draped curtains very long.

Big silver or gold framed mirror above the fireplace.

If the room is light you can go dark maybe a F&B stone green

if you have a lovely Persian rug this could look fabulous. Get house plants like orchids and ferns or a palm. So you are bringing the outside in (make it flow )

I'd look in antique shops for furniture and art. Lighting, I'd use lots of lamps and possibly a stand up lamp.

Shameem, as a decorator I would go for white ceilings and cornice and frieze (frieze is the wall area above the picture rail). If the room is bright enough try the stronger colours of Farrow and Ball or Benjamin Moore, Designer Guild etc... Woodwork you could stick with white, but if you decide to go with building cupboards/units for the alcoves either side of the fireplace, I would paint these in with the wall colour (eggshell finish) for a dramatic effect. I would also replace the carpet for a timber floor. Large mirror above the fireplace would work well here.

Hi Shameem. You don't have any ideabooks set up so we don't know what you like in terms of style and colour. Re colours it would be useful to know which way the room faces and what colours are rooms leading off this. Perhaps you can start looking on houzz for rooms you like, add comments as to what you like and then you'll start to get ideas for the room. Alternatively if you just want a modern mid century style or scandi etc just advise and people can make specific suggestions. Dimensions of the room would also be good and pics from other angles.

we were thinking of dark oak Laminates, but then would that look too dark?

Hi Shameem,

Your patio doors are letting a lot of light in so a dark oak floor should lend itself to the space without seeming too dark - especially if you're keeping the walls light. However, you might find that your lovely fireplace doesn't stand out as much against a dark floor.

For colour scheme I think navy and grey hues would complement and help the brass lighting stand out. You can also always fill up any space with plants, this will add a great refreshing touch to the interior, and help fill the room if needed.
