Water feature

Dear John I love the water feature (in fact the whole patio). I assume the steel or copper feature was custom made (could you recommend a company?) and is the whole water feature (including the pebble beds) re-circulating or is there a tab and a drain involved. Thank you very much. Cornelia

Hi Cornelia, I'm glad you like it. The wall is untreated copper so will patinate over time. Yes it's completely custom made and was tricky due to the size although with clever welding we managed to avoid any visible seams so that it appears to be a solid wall. The company I used was fairwater.co.uk . They used their own fabricator to actually make the wall The water feature has a separate chamber (just out of picture and housed underneath the deck with two pumps (one for the waterfall and the other to circulate the water when the feature is switched off) and brominator to maintain water clarity. It can be both tricky and costly to do water well but it is worth investing as you will then have a low maintenance feature which should serve you well for years.

Look carefully before you leap. When deciding on your water feature think carefully about maintenance - particularly algae. With the metal trough with 3 bubblers most of the water is hidden from the sun and so less stimulation of algae growth - although it will come. The water being hidden also keeps it cooler which helps. You could hide a UV filter under the metal as well which helps kill floating algae (microscopic) and you would need ideally to treat the water with a chemical (lots on the market that are safe for animals etc). The real challenge with this feature is making sure the top is exactly level, otherwise the water will flow off to one side. With a glass/mirror wall you are exposing quite a lot of water to the sun (depending how high it is) and the trough will get direct light as well. All stimulators of algae growth. You could still use the UV filter and chemical treatment though.

Lots of tutorials on how to build a pool/pond on youtube. Probably better than a long list of instructions. Keep in mind though that earth doubles in volume when dug up so 8x2x0.4 will give you about 12 cubic meters that will need to be disposed of.

Hi there, What is the globe feature in the middle? Is it a statuary or a fire bowl of some sorts? If it is a fire bowl, I would probably increase the paved circle area around it to be able to place some seating. If it is statuary, I would work on a nice planting scheme to go around the circled paving area. Planting around it would accentuate the circle shape (which seems to be a theme in the garden as you seem to have a circular lawn as well) as you would then have a kind of a circular border around it, which can be seen from a distance (due to the height of the plants).
