Why do we love white kitchens?

At Asselle, we design, manufacture and install kitchens, bespoke furniture and interior systems for homeowners and residential developers for over 20 years. More and more, we've seen a recent trend in the popularity of our white kitchens. This is further supported by Houzz's most recent Kitchen Trends report, which identified that 1 in 3 homeowners on Houzz are staying safe when it comes to kitchen colour and opting for white.

So why do we love white kitchens? We thought we'd ask you....

Cleaner and less detailed surroundings help the brain rest and relax after long days of impressions and thoughts. What better way to get into home zen mode than in a white subtle kitchen?

I have an open plan kitchen/reception. White makes it seem less cluttered!

While white fencing isn't for me in a back garden, I have seen loads of pics here on Houzz with white fences and, although they mostly seem to be over in the USA (let's face it - they tend to have better daylight in parts of North America than we do in the UK) I do like the look of it, though. I especially like the whitewash appearance if you're going for a Cottage Garden as it adds a weathered appeal. I went for black in my garden which looks pretty stylish, especially with the greens and whites in front of it. I used to live in a house with a roof terrace and we were advised at the time to not use white on the inside of the parapet walls as it would glare too much. The chosen option for the wall was pale grey (before it was fashionable) and it worked really well. For this reason, I wouldn't have gone for white fence or white furniture.

So much emphasis is placed on floors and walls when designing a room. The ceiling is at best a distant relation and as such gets a coat of paint and some randomly placed light fittings. This is a huge surface area that could be used to enhance the room. This is an example of a room we did recently. The bedroom had standard height ceilings and due to the nature of the room you would be lying on the bed looking up at a blank white surface. To combat this I designed a simple series of MDF boxes to be mounted on the ceiling with black mirrors inset. I think you will agree this transforms the room !!! www.angel-martin.com

Do we need fire door between kitchen

I am not an expert but I believe you do not need a fire door on the kitchen if the house is two storeys, only if 3 or 4 storeys. So beware if there is a chance of a loft conversion at some point. Otherwise you are ok. I believe fire doors do not need self closers any more. I’m not sure if you could have a cat flap in a fire door, I can’t see how it would still be fireproof with a hole in it. But hopefully these things are not an issue for you anyway given 2 storeys. I think you would want some sort of door there to stop kitchen noise and smells from pervading the rest of the house, but it’s personal choice. Our kitchen door lives open most of the time but we do shut it eg if cooking fish or curry or if we have people over and kids are sleeping upstairs, or if one of us has got up earlier and starts banging pans and plates and the other is still sleeping...

Ummm... I went out of my way to have a dark kitchen, black carcass, teal gloss fronts, black appliances, and slate/stone grey floor!... I must be in the 2 out of 3 people that are moody people lol

A lot of our clients feel that white is a 'safer' and cleaner option in comparison to other colours. We do encourage that you add some soft colour into your space as sometimes a fully white kitchen can look to clinical or sparse.
