Mairead, I think that Comfort is a big consideration as well as colour. I recommend that you choose barstools with backs. I like both, depending on their use. For sociability, the swivel are great. For writing or some other, more 'stationary' function, the stationary are it. The swivel is too much work to keep it stationary!

Comfort & design. We have the same as in the 2nd picture which are really comfortable to sit on and they look great too. So many we looked at especially with no back support whilst may look great are not that good to sit on for any length of time. When we have family/friends round they are more than happy choosing to spend an evening sat in the Eames style stool over our sofa. As we have an open plan kitchen/living/ dining area, we are also thinking of choosing a mix of colours in the same design to replace the chairs at our dining table.
