Single mattresses over here are 3ft as standard or 2ft 6" for skinny ones, so no, neither would fit on a double or a queen. A Super king bed is the only one wide enough for the width of the mattresses but it would be too long by 6 inches. What you have to shop for over here is a 'zipped' super king bed. The mattresses are made the right size. A lot of suppliers have frames that will take two different mattresses these days. You just have to shop about. Here's two of them:- Best Price Bed, & Swoon

Hi Kit Kat. Personally I think the stark black and white everywhere must be horrible to live with, very visually disturbing. It must be a very old traditional cottage so I can see why your husband might insist on keeping it as is. Use the Houzz image search or Pinterest to search for limed oak cottage interiors and build up a gallery of images that could illustrate to him how much softer it would look without all that black! Removing the black would give the most authentic finish but might be a total nightmare to do, often people have to have them blasted in situ (expensive and very messy!). If he still won’t listen then it may seem odd but painting the walls a darker tone (closer to black) would help with the jarring contrast! I like your ideas four poster etc but I think that room is too small for anything like that. You could find some richly patterned fabric for the curtains and hang some as a headboard. Best of luck with changing your husbands mind, you are right though, stick to your guns!

Do you plan to have a double bed in each room including your master? Having a 4 bedroom house, can give you the space to have a super king in your master bedroom which would balance the space out. Going with the 4 bedroom idea and having a larger master en-suite - it feels like there is a lot of empty unusable corridor space. I think this could be tweaked to make it a fabulous space... Just a brief look at your space, you have 3 wardrobes - could you make the middle one a door into the en-suite, allowing you to have a larger rectangle walk in shower opposite the bath. You could have also have drawers / dressing table on the wall as you come into the bedroom. Think about where the door to the master bedroom would be as it would ideally be balanced around the windows in the corridor. Presuming the windows are fixed. Could bedroom 2 have the door where the 5 bedroom layout is allowing more space for your bedroom door? The A/C cupboard - do you need it? Could you make it wider and smaller depth or a wardrobe for yourselves? It's a little difficult without measurements to work it all out... This is an example of the idea I suggested above. (We are towards the end of renovating our place and we changed it from 5 bed to a 4 but added an en-suite into each room. We don't miss the useless little box room!)
