Hi, hope everyone is still up to commenting, I have a related question to the above. I want to do something similar to what Marie VW has done, except I want our double sided Burner to go between two rooms. Our living room and a family room which is part of an extension we had built and I am sure visually it will look superb. Between the 2 rooms is a solid wall that was the outside wall and a flue chimney which the Burner is to be located in. I am sure there are no structural or ventilation problems and I will get that checked, but my question is does anyone know whether there is anyway you can reduce the noise travel between the rooms from the opening in which the fire is located? Is it possible to have a heat resistant glass that would go across partly between the rooms? Has anyone any experience of a double sided burner between rooms and whether it does dissipate a lot of noise between rooms?

There are specialist paints for concrete, so I think that will be possible. There are also heat resistant paints for painting cast iron log burners which you could use on the concrete as well.

Hi Hayley. I think I would use the garage as a living room - it will be such a nice space with the exposed beams, and putting a fire in here will make it amazing! So, I would make the kitchen and island similar to the below - you will then have space to have a walk in pantry or utility room (or even just other storage) behind the kitchen. If you are wanting/able to move the boiler, then this would open up more space, but would also cost a lot more. If you went with this sort of layout, there is a few ways you could configure the full height kitchen units. I think its important to have both an island/breakfast bar, and then a free standing table, as i feel the image you shared above from Wren, there is a bit of a disconnect between the kitchen and the island. Do you mean like this? We had ours done by a professional (who I can highly recommend if you’re in the Norfolk area), but it was done as part of a whole log burner replacement, chimney lining project, so I wouldn‘t know how much fitting an elbow would be on its own. I don’t think we’d have tackled this ourselves though. Ours had to be brought forward as the recess can’t be any deeper than it currently is, and there is legislation about how close to the back wall it can be I think.
