i would go for glass, however those socket positions is both inconvenient and unusable in relation to the up stands, i would suggest a little baton to bring the glass in line with the upstands, you will find that plugging something in to the socket with the cable pointing downward is virtually impossible as the up stand prevents the plug from fully inserting.

Hi suzbeney We've done a couple of brass splashbacks and we always mount it onto ply. I'll have to disagree and say that it's a much more robust material than MDF. Changing the doors is a fairly simple process, then it will look like a brand new kitchen. A favourite painting/print that you would like to put in to the room? If so, take your inspiration from that, pick out the colour that you like and go from there.. Or keep the kitchen neutral as seems to be the trend at the minute and add colour by painting a wall in a colour that pleases you. It is your kitchen!! Make it work for you. Good Luck.

I would just put a clear glass splashback behind the hob to protect the wall. Having said that it would have looked better fitted before the upstand as it looks better mounted direct on the worktop. By having a clear glass splashback it will let the wall colour show through so each time you emulsion it will give the effect of that colour through the splashback. The units you have chosen represent a contemporary finish and I think you need to maintain this, so nothing fancy.
