Disaster family room - please help!
We desperately need some inspiration for our dark 'family room'. We did a whole house renovation last year and still haven't decided what to do with a room off the kitchen we call the family room. It doesn't have a window, and is currently a bit of a dumping ground for toys and pictures we haven't got round to hanging. We have a two year old so need to have somewhere to store toys and books. We also watch TV in here. We have a smarter separate sitting room which we want to keep child-free.
We intend keep the large blue three seater sofa for now as it's ikea and so pretty resistant to sticky fingers. The walls are painted in Elephant's Breath. The house is Edwardian.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Comments (3)Just had a solid oak floor put into a kitchen/diner/family room. The look is wonderful. I got help from other Houzzers on cleaning and Maintainance which works well so far. It creates an expensive look and is nicer under bare feet for a family space. Maybe a bit more Maintainance is required over all, but I always think that anything nice is worth the effort. Clean with a Swiffer or Vaccum cleaner. Mop up spills and find out from the manufacturer which products to use and when. Comments (27)Picture is not very clear but its probably a bit lighter than in picture as taken on my phone I have fallen in LOVE with F&B Wisteria wallpaper in the cinder rose background and I think it matches perfectly with the vert de terre which will be in the kitchen... Im thinking wallpaper back wall behind the long bit of the sofa and facing the chimney and then a lighter shade on the wall adjoining it where the short length of sofa will go... perhaps shaded white? I like elephants breath but I think this maybe too dark and this wall needs to reflect light into the room ... Then onto chimney brest and alcoves... There will be a stove in the opening and a tv on the brest above the stove ... do I also wallpaper the brest or the alcoves or do I apint one of these just in cinder rose or do I use the other 2 shades in the wallpaper!??! decisions decisions......See MoreHelp with family room

Was originally looking at either a grey or dark blue velvet but the green would probably work better. I agree with your comments about lighting and tables and have already had a good look at the websites mentioned. we definitely need some storage and am debating whether to get a sideboard or have built in storage in the alcove opposite the door. Comments (21)Hi Yolanda - I'd change the stools, table and chairs, and swap the pendants for something in coloured glass or (personally) metallic, and change the cabinet handles from steel to brass/gold. Instant lift. Splashback-wise, try distressed mirror (suitably tempered and toughened) as it has loads of personality, bounces light around and is easy to clean. Then play with wall colour. 8 years agoYou could cover the short wall at the back in (white) storage. This Eket system from Ikea has the option to add some colours too. I'd do the main part white and add perhaps some orange & pink (referring to the copper in the kitchen) and/or blue open storage boxes.
Also add lights and lots of bright coloured cushions on the sofa.
Ikea also has LED light panels with wireless control, that you can hang on the wall above the sofa. You could hang three in a row for example, or hang 6 or so together to form a fake window.

8 years agoI think the key to dour design is going to be lighting it is a bit unfortunate that it's so close to your well lit kitchen yet it is so dark. I don't know what is above the room but you could possibly explore the idea of introducing a light tube to get some more natural daylight in.
