Please help me choose flooring for my kitchen/family room

Should I choose real wood, laminate, vinyl or ceramic tiles for a kitchen floor? The room is 35m2 and will also be used as a family room. I need to think of ease of cleaning but I also want something that will keep its looks. My kitchen units are a mixture of cream and walnut high gloss and my chairs are black/brown. I can't believe it is so hard to make a decision. Please give me your advice. Thank you

Just had a solid oak floor put into a kitchen/diner/family room. The look is wonderful. I got help from other Houzzers on cleaning and Maintainance which works well so far. It creates an expensive look and is nicer under bare feet for a family space. Maybe a bit more Maintainance is required over all, but I always think that anything nice is worth the effort. Clean with a Swiffer or Vaccum cleaner. Mop up spills and find out from the manufacturer which products to use and when. Whatever your choice, ENJOY!

Wow! Thanks to all of you for your comments. I think the room in Susanna's picture is beautiful but I think I want a slightly less romantic feel if you can see what I mean? I think I'm trying to get a modern, clean lines look that will major on natural palette BUT that is softened by some texture and I think a pop of colour rather than lots of colour. The Dining Chairs are black leather with brushed steel legs - no wood. I like the greeny blue colour backsplash in mrsmcee74's picture but might want something a little more punchy if I went with that palette. Love the John Lewis Dandelions - had them in the bedroom for a couple of years but that room is next in my list! This is really making me think about what I want for the kitchen / family room. Very helpful indeed!!

Hi. I agree with emanuelle. I'd go for an old wooden table and mix it with contemporary chairs. If the walls are going white then add either colour with the chairs (a mix could also be good) or texture. I'd go for a rectangular table rather than circle. You can pick up contemporary chairs cheaply on ebay

I think the DSW chairs would look great but I agree they seem to be everywhere now so it's hard to justify the price tag for something which isn't very unique (and essentially just plastic). You mentioned mid century. Have you considered auctions/gumtree. You can pick up a set of original mid century chairs very cheaply if you hunt for them. I'm on the look out too for dining chairs and have also found most chairs I like cost £150+.

Hi Yolanda - I'd change the stools, table and chairs, and swap the pendants for something in coloured glass or (personally) metallic, and change the cabinet handles from steel to brass/gold. Instant lift. Splashback-wise, try distressed mirror (suitably tempered and toughened) as it has loads of personality, bounces light around and is easy to clean. Then play with wall colour. Warm accents will stop the wood door from jarring so much (or paint it, if you can convince your husband). You have a lovely kitchen - will take very little to get it where you want!
