Introducing Our New Advice Section
Chances are you’ve noticed that Houzz has unveiled its new and improved Advice section! The Advice section welcomes anyone looking for helpful tips on their home improvement project, whatever their size or budget. Perhaps you’ve already had a Houzzer giving you useful advice, or you’ve shared your own experience with the community.
With The Advice section’s new look, it makes it easier to connect with other users while providing a more efficient and targeted way of exchanging ideas. Here are some exciting new features to get stuck into.
Your own personalised feed
The new design is focused on making the section more responsive to your needs. You can now follow topics of your choice, giving you access to a live stream of discussions that are tailored to you. For example, you can follow “kitchen”, “living room” or “bathroom” topics, depending on what’s relevant to you.
New topics
There are now more specific home renovation topics to browse and post to. From “Furniture” to “Appliances” to “DIY” and “Kids’ Rooms”, you can get involved in so many new areas of discussion.
Post to multiple topics
You can now post your questions under multiple relevant topics at the same time to get a wider range of feedback. Your post will then appear under all of these categories.
Top contributors
On the revamped desktop version, you can now view the most active community members. Check out the “Top Contributor” list to see if you’re one of them!

Comments (43)I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Along with wooden fruit bowl etc. The main window will have wooden venetian blinds, and the bay windows will probably be done in a darker grey material as the perfect fit style blinds you find in conservatories...See MoreIdeas for the Advice section!
Comments (45)Me again! Can we also have a reader's how to section. Such as a designer showing in pictures how to stage a sideboard with bijouterie depending on style, or how to style a bedroom with accents, or even articles on how to achieve X,Y,Z on a budget (I'm sure Houzzer's will have an idea - maybe this could be a section in itself?) Articles on colour or pattern matching etc would appeal vastly methinks. Even simple things that can easily be found on an internet search such as how to prep bannisters for painting would give a more magazine feel. Also a regional links page for cateogries. These could accompany articles. For eg. an article on prepping with images and step by step along with a list of Houzz recommended companies regionally who could undertake the work or fix a botched job! Topics I would be interested in include: How to add value to your home, how to maximise light, how to achieve a professional finish decorating; interior design ideas; how to change the facade of a property; flowers for the garen, door way, flowers for shaded areas, climbers for shaded areas, scented plants, how to ensure colour in the garden all year round etc. Decorating/furnishing ideas to create optical illusions to create size/light etc. Thanks for asking. Comments (15)I recently carpeted my toddlers room and originally I wanted hard flooring but I must say I'm glad I didn't. I think carpet would be much more comfortable for your little boy to be playing on for years to come. Don't spend too much ;) I was wiping sick off mine the other week and if it was a very expensive carpet I would have been nervous as hell. Luckily it all came out fine! I know both carpet and wood have pros and cons so I guess you need to weigh it up whilst making sure you put comfort and practicality over how it looks (boring I know...) you would need a lovely thick rug over your wood floor which would be a nice touch to the nursery......See MoreOur new house
Comments (3)Hello Jo, I like the green colour.. it's refreshing from the usual cream people do. But before you decide on that.. I do actually quite like the cladding.. Normally I am not a fan, but in this case it lends itself nicely. Why it's just a small piece between the windows I am not sure but you could do a lot more or all of it dare I say.. I'm thinking the Cotswolds...... Then I would have something trained over the walls.. A climber plant like clematis with the really dark purple flowers... Like the dark green for the garage and the gate (s)?... You could also have some lovely large pots with a lovely bay or olive if you get the sun.. Cherry laurel is good too for hedging if you need some..I do seem to pick this one a lot as it has large dark leaves- it makes a fantastic hedge. There is a large section of wall.. Do you plan to put in a window? Talking of windows.. Are those upvc? I would suggest painting them otherwise... and you could perhaps benefit from a new front door,as it looks a little lost as it is.. Painted in the dark green that you will have the garage and gate.. I think would help to compliment it all.. Have found a few images of styles with some glazing- I think having some painted wood would really lift it out and make the house stand out more..
